Tracy Smith Suspended One Game
WRAL:
N.C. State men’s basketball coach Sidney Lowe announced Monday that junior Tracy Smith has been suspended for the Wolfpack’s game at Arizona for violating the ACC policy regarding commenting on officials.
Smith, who made the comments Sunday night following the loss at Wake Forest, will continue to practice and travel with the team to Arizona, but will not compete.
The shame of it is that this game looks very winnable. Arizona has limped its way to a 4-5 start, and the Cats actually rank below us in the Pomeroy ratings. But now, without our lone interior presence and best rebounder? Seems it won't be a merry Macrowave Christmas after all.
Next time, Tracy, keep it to yourself.

Do you think
Arizona is relieved that they won’t have to use their decontamination facilities, or mad that they build them only for them to go unused?
Also
i would just like to reemphasize that this sucks big time. I would have much rather seen Tracy stomp on Chas after his flop and get suspended for a game. At least he would have gotten his money’s worth.
actually i think wake was about 30 spots higher. but i don't remember
At any rate, Arizona needed OT to beat Lipscomb (#258 in Pomeroy ratings) at home tonight. So perhaps we have a shot even without Tracy.
We won't get that effort from the Cats
I mean, when do we EVER get that effort from teams? Seriously…

I'm sure
Arizona will bank in a couple crucial 3 pointers against us. Maybe Horner will pick up a T for his sideburns.

The rankings are all odd this time of year
I know “RealTimeRPI” had us around 60, and them around 110… Sagarin had us lower… guess I hadn’t looked at Pomeroy lately…
Smith's block of Woods shot
while its unfortunate that Smith is suspended there is another issue that bothers me. is it a foul when player lands on top of a shooter after blocking his shot? at this time, i would like to plead before the court of public opinion that when Ish Smith blocked Scott Wood’s shot in the second half, Smith should have been whistled for an intentional flagrant foul allowing Wood to shoot to free shots and State to get the ball out of bounds. i use as support for my case Courtney Felds v. Virginia Tech player, February 2009, Blacksburg Virginia. in said case when Felds blocked said Virginia Tech player’s shot the official judge ruled that while said Felds blocked the shot cleanly, he after blocking the shot, intentionally and flagrantly fouled said Virginia Tech player too hard such that said Virginia Tech player was to given two free throw shots and Virginia Tech awarded the ball out of bounds. This case set a presidence for two foul shots and the awarding of the ball out of bounds to the shooter and his team when a player intentionally flagrantly fouls a player when blocking said players shot. :-).
typo errors
a couple of typo errors in my previous post. should have been “when a player lands on top…” and “Wood to shoot two free throw shots”. please accept my apology for such errors.
I do not think
that plays like that are automatic fouls, but there are definitely many instances where they should be fouls. I think if a player can not block the shot of another player without clobbering them afterwards, a foul call is warrented. I know that I have been called for such fouls in organized games. I also know that if I see a defender flying at me when I shoot it, and I know he is going to collide with me, it can often alter my shot even if I know he has no chance of actually blocking the shot.
Let’s look at it another way. How many times have you seen a player attempt to block a shot, miss the block, and then collide into the shooter after the shooter releases the ball? That describes a large percentage of 3 or 4 (in the case of a 3 point shooter) point plays. Why should the defenders’ contact with the ball make a difference?
Does anyone remember
the flagrant foul Cliff Crawford got (against clemson or GT I think) when he swiped over an offensive player’s head to make a clean block while defending against a fast break? The block was perfectly clean, but the ref ruled it flagrant because he swung his arm so fast over the other player’s head that it could have been dangerous that the ref ruled it flagrant (or maybe the ref was just an idiot and had the result of the play in his head prior to it actually happening). That kind of shit only happens to NCSU.
The ref ruled it flagrant...
… because we were wearing the red & white.
Honestly, if you go back through the past, say, 10-15 years, there are some unbelievable calls that we’ve gotten the short end of… calls that I’ve never seen again in the same situations.
K turned the tables by bitching & whining… maybe Tracy’s outburst & the attention from it will make refs think twice before asking us to bend over & say “please”…

what's amazing to me
Is that the players change, the coaches change, but the bizarre shit never ends. I wish I could say we’re all just paranoid, but to say that would be to forget about all the crazy BS I’ve seen.
So who’s ready for conference play?
I know during my
first couple years at NCSU (and the first time I ever paid attention to NC State/ACC basketball) I thought to myself, “at least when Inge and Thornton are gone all of these shitty calls will go with them.” What a naive 19 year old I was.
Palming call on Gainey in Durham (probably the most incedulous I have ever been at a call)
5 point play for UNC in chapel hill
Cliff Crawford flagrant
Bennerman Tech for “hanging on the rim” at chapel hill
Second half foul calls against hodge and powell playing duke in the ACC championship while Reddick runs through moving screen after moving screen
Tech on the bench for wiping up a wet spot on the floor in the ACC tourney against UMd
Paul not getting thrown out of the game after punching hodge and then having him hit the game winner
Hansbrough not getting thrown out for swinging at MacCauley in raleigh
ugh, I know there are more, but my brain just shot down from depression

Bennerman was simply a target
The most egregious display I can recall wasn’t even a foul called on him… there was a play (don’t remember the exact details) where Cam ended up sliding across the floor on his butt… slid out of bounds in the corner… the ref (don’t recall which one, I but I believe Larry Rose) stared him down the entire way, daring him to say anything about the call/no-call that had just happened. Continued to stare at him, daring him, for at least 5 seconds or so. Cam thankfully kept his trap shut, got up, and walked away.
It was like an abused spouse who was being threatened not to say anything “or else”….

I do remember that
The thing is, Bennerman was not bad about showing the ref’s up, but they sure did seem to hate him.

painful memories
The towel T in the UMd game might be the biggest WTF moment in ACC sports this decade.
