Apparently Florida State Is Playing Defense Again

While his reputation and his program were sagging, Bobby Bowden's recruiting continued to bring in strong class after strong class.  The talent was there.  Maybe not the wealth of riches from their 90s heyday, maybe not maximized the way it had been in those days, but it was and is there.  That's one of the factors that made last year's complete disaster of a defense so confusing.

Jimbo Fisher had a real mess on his hands, or so it seemed, when he took over for Bowden after the 2009 season.  In the spring, Fisher and new defensive coordinator began the cleanup process by installing a new scheme.  The Noles are more zone-oriented now than they've been in (perhaps) decades.

It was reasonable to expect improvement no matter what happened with the scheme.  2009 was an aberration when compared to the years preceding it, and it would have been tough to avoid at least a smidge of bounce back from the 6.7 yards FSU allowed per play.  But I don't think anyone expected this:

FSU Defense Total D (rank) Scoring D Yds/Play Yds/PassAtt Yds/Rush 3rd Down Conv%
2009 434.6 (108) 30 (94) 6.7 (115) 8.7 (116) 5.4 (112) 44.1 (101)
2010 308.1 (20) 16.1 (13) 4.3 (10) 5.8 (11) 2.9 (12) 32.1 (17)

Total defense actually undersells the 2010 Seminoles defense a bit, as by every per-play standard, they're a top 15 unit.  They've shaved almost 2.5 yards off their per-play and per-rush averages, almost three yards off opponents' pass attempts.  See, kids, going from also-ran to division favorite is as easy as shaving a couple of yards off of your per-play averages.

They've held five of seven opponents under 5.0 yards per snap, and even their lone hiccup--the blowout at Oklahoma--isn't that bad by last year's standards.  In fact, it would have been their fifth-best defensive performance of 2009.

The Noles got bigger and stronger during the offseason, and that's paying dividends; especially up front, where they're putting more pressure on the quarterback (they lead the nation in sacks) and consistently derailing the ground game.

Florida State's schedule hasn't provided much in the way of good offenses (which is one of the reasons why FEI doesn't care for this defense), so it remains to be seen just how good the new-look Noles are.  Is this the best defense in the ACC?  Maybe not.  Is it better than it was a year ago and also good enough to propel the Seminoles to a division title?  Definitely.  Whatever the case, another 45-42 game seems unlikely.

Excellent write up A. Wolf

Not a thing to disagree with. I especially liked the disclaimer about total defense and skepticism on the to-date competition. Russell and you’re receivers will certainly test us and provide definitive answers to questions we still have.

The "D' is better

and our offense can be quite frustrating at times, but overall the Noles are a much more balanced team. While I agree that we’ve had our share of oh um offensive schemes thrown our way, we do seem to be riding the learning curve pretty well on defense. Though I don’t see any elite offenses coming our way on the schedule I do see several opportunities against some good teams that will tell us whether the “D” stats are legit or built on cupcakes. Nice write up……

Nice piece

Will say that the jump on D this year isnt just the sceme. May be because these kids actually got a play book to study and are training to be in the right place not just "running around trying to make a plays.

Thank God for the men and women who stand tall in the night to protect this great country we love so much

i agree completely

The numbers are too vastly improved to just be the product of the schedule.

The Big Difference is Coaching

As a fan of both schools (sort of), I’m looking forward to one hell of a game Thursday. Sort of depends on which version of FSU and NCSU show up.

Even though Jimbo Fisher was hired as “head coach in waiting”, those inflated titles Bobby gave to Mickey Andrews and Chuck just confirmed that Bobby Bowden never really accepted Jimbo, and it led to a lot of confusion for the players and the other assistants. Despite that, FSU oftense was, most years under Jimbo, at least pretty good — seems to me like bad defense lost more games than bad offense, and didn’t win any the last couple of years.

Now, there is no confusion. Jimbo took charge from Day 1 and instituted several overdue changes (discipline, diet, academic priorities, etc.), correcting some of the glaring deficiencies of the last few years (some would say 10 years).

Bobby Bowen is one of the great coaches of all time, but he just hung on too long (yep, he’s not the first to do that), Mickey was one of the best, but he didn’t change his strategy once other teams figured out how to go against his defenses. I know most people didn’t like Chuck after the first couple of years at NCSU, and his teams were not a good return on what NCSU invested in the program. His first stint at FSU was great. His return, yes, was awful, but I’m not sure how much of that was due to Mickey. Don’t know what Chuck is doing now, but wish him the best.

Anyway, both teams are pretty good this year, so it’s gonna be interesting.

Chuck is not coaching this year, as he is recovering from cancer.

If I remember correctly, the prognosis for him is very good.

I know that process is the focus, but I would really LOVE to see some results against UM and UF.

Good write up. Yes the D is better...

using a modern scheme & starting to become comfortable in it. As for the O, it lost 3 starting WRs since ‘09—2 to graduation and 1 to dismissal—which explains why the O has been less effective in general. But based on what I’ve seen this season, the success of the O depends on play-calling. Jimbo doesn’t make full use of his playbook against weaker opponents (e.g., BYU, Wake Forest, Virginia, etc.); but he did against Miami. I expect him to open the playbook against the Wolfpack on Thursday night.

Accountabilty is back in Tallahassee....

Nice article, but wrong in two key respects:

1) The ridiculous depth and talent FSU got in the 90’s from the best recruiting bed in the country (largely due to the effects of consecutive NCAA scholly and bowl sanctions against UF then Miami lasting about 15 years) was not “maximized” by Bowden. His staff was notorious for getting out-schemed and failing to develop certain units (esp. the OL). Their often-stated philosophy was not to get in the players’ way, just line ’em up and let ’em play. Hence the lack of discipline, poor clock management, copious penalties, and frequent losses to comparably talented teams (miami). We often won by attrition late in our games.

2) We have not had much enrolled talent on defense for a number of years. Fisher started to turn things around with the class he hauled in just this year. Much of our D, and many would say the most talented players, are very young and are still learning a radically different scheme and approach while developing their bodies.

The past and future implications of those 2 facts are disturbing to many, I know. But they are true none the less. A few more top 5-10 recruiting classes (esp. with UF and miami on the decline again), combined with our now solid coaching that obsesses on detail, technique, nutrition, S&C and proper development, and our D may well better than what we fielded in the 90’s.

Thanks.

Re: #2, I was just going by recruiting rankings in my admittedly very general overview. I appreciate the details.

yeah, but don't feel bad....

Bowden’s staff of semi-retirees did that same thing over the last 6-7 years. ; ) And they were getting paid while sitting at home and not evaluating!

Good article

Like most people, I think you’ll see FSU’s defensive numbers decline as they are now hitting the tough portion of their schedule.

One of the biggest variables that has contributed to the Noles early successes on defense is that FSU has also managed to avoid any serious injuries on the defensive line. FSU only has four contributing defensive tackles (no seniors) and four contributing defensive ends (one senior).
