Maryland is strongly considering asking coach Ralph Friedgen to retire and accept a buyout, according to multiple sources.
Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson said Friday he would not address whether Friedgen was guaranteed to return in 2011. Anderson was addressing reporters on the departure of James Franklin, who took the head coaching job at Vanderbilt Commodores on Friday.

The buyout would be...
… 2 dozen Krispy Kremes… one glazed, one mixed… and an unlimited gift card to Golden Corral.
sounds like he's done

Mike Leach’s name has been coming up a lot on the Twitters.
what a change of events.
first the AD states, in view of this year’s record, that he is staying, then all of sudden he is gone. what changed his mind other than Franklin taking the head coaching job at another school.
Franklin was the main cog...
that got the ball rolling on this. From I’ve read Franklin had gone to the AD to get some kind of assurance that he would get the head coaching gig after Friedgen retired/contract expired at the end of next season. Anderson wouldn’t give him a definitive answer and so he decided to leave for Vandy. Word also was that Fridge’s assistants didn’t want to be coaching at MD next year in lame duck status so they were going to go with Franklin so that left Md in a situation they really didn’t mind being in…buying out the Fridge. The money they saved from having to pay Franklin (~1-2 million) at the time of him becoming head coach they could use to pay off Fridge. That’s what I have gathered anyway.
not that i care much what goes on at Maryland, as i absolutely
dislike them sportswise, i think it would have been in their interest to stay with the Fridge after Franklin left. with a young team and a good quarterback, winning 8+ games with the Fridge as coach next year seems reasonable. don’t know if a new coach can do much more.
problem would be his lame duck status
Might torpedo next year’s recruiting class if everyone knows the Fridge is only going to be around for one year. I don’t think Maryland was willing to take that risk. I wouldn’t either, if I were them.
