Box Score

Lorenzo Brown shot well but committed seven turnovers.  Ryan Harrow and CJ Leslie were a combined 2-23 from the field.  Without a decent option in the low post, our fortunes are completely tied to those kids, and what that means on nights like this one is that we have no offense.  Scott Wood was excellent tonight but his impact is limited by his unwillingness to throw up dumb ass shots and his inability to create anything for himself or score inside the arc.

There was a different feeling associated with this loss.  At one point during the second half, with the team well behind and standing around at the offensive end, I thought I heard the crowd booing, but then I thought people were yelling "mooooooove!" at the players.  Maybe I was projecting.  Not having the ability to go inside-out, both because Tracy isn't there and because the forwards who are have zero awareness or willingness to kick it out, is a serious handicap.  More than that, and beyond the obvious problems associated with relying on a trio of freshmen, though, it's a complete lack of structure that's killing this team.  Most of the time I have no idea what we're trying to do offensively.  Unless Scott Wood is running off a couple of screens, it doesn't look like there is any sort of plan in place.

So we end up with CJ Leslie taking an 18-footer when he hasn't hit anything and isn't open.  We have Ryan Harrow trying impossible floaters, Javi Gonzalez pulling up for an ill-advised three.  Tracy's absence is an excuse that only goes so far.  His absence is not a surprise from a preparation standpoint, not anymore.  At this point there must be alternatives besides "get out in transition."  We it comes down to a halfcourt game, we have nothing.  Why does Richard Howell catch the ball at the top of the key three-quarters of the time when he's the only guy with a decent back-to-the-basket repertoire?  Why can't we put Ryan Harrow in a position to succeed?

Sidney Lowe did a lot of sweating tonight, and I can't imagine it was entirely due to the temperature inside the building.

Booo or Moooove

I was there, up in 325, and it sounded like move rather than boo to me. Even my wife was yelling. They just look stagnant out there.

I was hoping, somehow, that with talented freshmen, we wouldn’t go through all those freshmen moments that all young teams have. I think that hope died today after suffering massive trauma over the last month..

Why didn't Howell play more

He was having a pretty decent game, and with smith out he’s our best back to the basket scorer. In 16 minutes he had 12 pts and 7 boards, that’s certainly much better than Painter or Leslie who both got 2 pts in 20+ minutes.

by packfan8 on Dec 20, 2010 2:18 AM EST reply actions

We never seem to play

Leslie and Howell at the same time. I guess Lowe sees Howell strictly as a PF. Against a team like Arizona, with no true center, we could definitely have afforded to put Howell at the 5. Howell will play better D and rebound better than Vberg anyways.

by PACKHOOLIGAN on Dec 20, 2010 1:57 PM EST up reply actions

I wish I could understand this

I mean…what exactly are Lowe’s requirements for being able to play the five? What is it that supposedly disqualifies Howell?

by Akula Wolf on Dec 20, 2010 2:14 PM EST up reply actions

Do they still have a radio show for the coach?

If so, someone should call and ask Lowe about this.

by TVP on Dec 20, 2010 5:35 PM EST up reply actions

Season stats per 40 minutes

Howell: 18.9 pts, 14.6 rebs
Painter: 11.5 pts, 9.1 rebs

Howell has made 56.6% of his twos, Painter just 44.2%.

Plus

it’s not likely, but Howell might actually pass the ball after he receives it in the post.

by PACKHOOLIGAN on Dec 20, 2010 2:28 PM EST up reply actions

Good call.

Painter still with zero assists this year. Howell has seven.

Oh yeah

Please get well soon Tracy, we miss you.

i doubt the addition of Tracy Smith will save this team.

i hoped that Harrow, Brown and Leslie would correct what has been wrong with State the last three years, but it dosen’t appear to be true. like Youngstown, Arizona came in and shot “lights out”. State eventually stopped Youngstown, but since Arizona is much better, State could not stop them.
after a recent game i said to my wife that Lowe can’t coach. she answered by saying that that was established last year.
is there another conference team or major conference team with a player with a beard like Tracy Smith’s, or with so many players unshaven. this is nit picking, but its a matter of discipline. Lowe should shave his chin hair and have his players be clean shaven. Lowe is a NBA player’s coach, but this doesn’t work at the college level.
Lowe has again an undisciplined team which can’t play defense and does not have a clue offensively. his fault!

Brian Zoubek

rocked a nice beard at Duke. I don’t see how anyone shaving is going to improve team defense and effort unless it leads to a reduced drag coefficient?

by mplode on Dec 20, 2010 2:31 PM EST up reply actions

Well, reducing the

coefficient of friction will result in less fun since Frictional force = coefficient of friction x Normal force (F=uN). If I am remembering my high school physics correctly.

Giglio in ACCNow stated that State would now have to make its case for

an NCAA bid via conference wins. i am guessing State will have to win 11-12 conference games or win the tournament. Stop Laughing!

Giglio

Is really going out on a limb there.

Depends on where the RPI is heading into conf play

It’s possible we’ll only need 9 wins. I would think some combo of 10 wins will do it (10 in reg season, 9 reg season + 1 ACCT, etc.).

by Akula Wolf on Dec 20, 2010 2:07 PM EST up reply actions

Bad team. Bad coach.

And those two things are directly linked.

This is bigger than Tracy… I mean, I’ve got news… he’s gone next year. So this is what we have to look forward to?

Look for the RBC to be empty this year…

by wolfonthehill on Dec 20, 2010 8:49 AM EST reply actions

Defense is just as much a concern

Even if we improve offensively, our team defense puts a ceiling on Lowe’s teams. Until Lowe realizes that defensive intensity is mandatory to be succesful in college bball, AND instills that into his teams, State will be mediocre at best.

Our offensive “sets” are just painful to watch. With Smith out, the floor needs to be spread so that guys like Harrow and Brown can create. We do not need Painter/Vberg and Leslie posting up, clogging up everything. Our offense should be run much more like Arizona’s where we keep the middle free, allowing the playmakers to drive and finish/dish.

i am being to harsh with regard to facial hair.

just old school. i wondered if anyone else feels the same way i do. guess not. :-)

by sbas2 on Dec 20, 2010 3:05 PM EST reply actions

one more thing. do any of our football players have facial hair.

if not, it could be a football thing, or it could be a discipline thing.
what comes to mind is that rumor than one of State’s big boosters told Amato that if he could not do anything about losing, at least he could stop looking like a clown-red shoes, sunglasses.

anyone know if that is true.

by sbas2 on Dec 20, 2010 3:08 PM EST reply actions

Never heard that before

But it would not surprise me if it was true.
