Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

UCI closer Kyle Necke came on to pitch the bottom of the 10th, but it was not his day. After retiring Kyle Wilson on an infield pop-up to start the inning, Necke walked Ciencin and gave up a single up the middle to Maynard to put runners on first and second for Canela, who atoned for his defensive malfeasances with his second double past the first-base bag and into the right-field corner. Ciencin and Maynard scored to tie the game at 4-4.

Necke played the percentages by walking Drew Poulk to pitch to Russell Wilson, but the Wolfpack left fielder got a 1-2 pitch to his liking and crushed it, high and deep over the wall in left-center for the Pack’s second extra-inning walkoff victory this week.

nice win

for state and good for Wilson. after i watched state pound LaSalle for four innings, i wondered if State was that good, or LaSalle that bad. maybe State is that good.

I'm gonna be torn...

… between pulling for Russell to do well… and pulling for Russell not to do well enough to go play pro ball… every homer will be bittersweet.

Is RW pro baseball material? I know he got scooped up by Baltimore in the entry draft but does he have a shot at making the pros?

he's still a well-regarded prospect

Everything I’ve read/heard says he’ll be drafted in June and then have to make a decision.

Cool. I was genuinely curious. I take it you’d rather him not go pro lest you be stuck with Glennon as QB?

We'd rather him not go pro...

… because, no matter how good an arm Glennon has, Russell is a once-in-a-decade kind of player. No matter who’s in the wings, we take a step backward offensively as soon as Russell steps off our campus.

I personally remain pretty high on Glennon, and I feel like we’re in very good shape in terms of a backup, should Russell get hurt. When Russell leaves, I think Glennon will take a few games to adjust to game speed (as he’s gotten no meaningful playing time so far), but then he’ll be a top-5 QB in the ACC.

But that’s just my opinion… never know til he takes real snaps.
