Pending Institute approval, Andy McCollum, a veteran coach with nearly 30 years of college coaching experience, will be named to the Georgia Tech staff as defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator.
"We will be happy to have a coach with the experience and knowledge that Andy will bring to our program," Johnson said. "I have coached against and recruited against him for a long time, and I am confident he will do an outstanding job here at Tech."

Is this a loss for the NC State coaching staff?
Or addition by subtraction? What’s the verdict? Curious since it’s a coach going from the Atlantic Division to the Coastal.
BC Interruption, a SB Nation Boston College sports community
consensus is that this is a loss for us
McCollum was a pretty good recruiter, especially in Georgia. I can’t speak to his coaching abilities.
Loss
McCollum was huge this year in recruiting and he did a respectable job with the LB’s this year. Sad to see him go, but will wish him the best of luck.
big loss
McCollum was one of the few guys on this staff who had a solid track record recruiting. Given that we have a LOFT problem (Lack Of F***ing Talent), losing recruiters is bad news. LB play was a mixed bag at best though I do think Cole, Manning, and Maddox showed improvement as the year went on. Hard to separate his coaching from Archer’s “scheme” from the rest of the suckitude.
I understand that McCollum had good reasons, some family related, for leaving. That said, it’s hard not to avoid getting a “fleeing the sinking ship” vibe here. Paul Johnson is kicking ass. TOB might be one more bad season away from early retirement. It’s too bad Johnson wasn’t available three years ago. Oh wait…dammit.
I wouldn't blame poor LB play
totally on McCollum either. Losing your star LB to a weird car accident is pretty rough way to start the season.
I guess the atmosphere that I've tried to create here is that I'm a friend first and a boss second, and probably an entertainer third.
