let me first say that Caldwell, UCLA's
coach, is also pretty good looking. Caldwell and Harper both played at Tenn. and both won national championships there although Harper won three to Caldwell’s one.
as i wrote earlier, Harper has been playing with house money as all but one player on her team are Yow recruits. losing Gartrel to graduation will hurt. Strachan should fill her position at small forward. Strachan is a better shooter, but not nearly as good a defender or ball handler. the team should be Kastanek’s next year. note that Kastanek led the team in scoring lost night with 21 and had according to the box scores only 3 turnovers.
Tia Bell should replace Ellison at center. Bell will score more but probably won’t defend as well or rebound as well.
the class that Harper signed this past year was ranked 47th nationally and 8/9 in the conference. however, Harper added Lakeesa Daniel, Wake Forest’s top recruit from last year who did not enroll, for the second semester. check out her bio from ESPNU: Daniel was very impressive at the Junior Phenom camp at Georgia Tech. She is a legit 6-4 and has incredible length. She makes shots close in with both hands and showed some very nifty post scoring moves, highlighted by a fantastic jump hook from a couple feet outside the box. She had nice footwork and extension on the hook and kept her body in line to protect the ball from the defender. She showed good touch on her finishes from the right box on numerous occasions. She skies in the air for rebounds despite her height and length that in most high school games will allow her to just reach for it. Daniel was 72 in her class.
with number 47 Myisha Goodwin at guard, its not a great class, but not a dismal one either. look for Kastanek, White, Tassler and Goodwin to rotate at guard with Daniel and Lliteras backing up Holston, Strachan and Bell at center and forward.
the other signees this year are Kody Burke, Devin Griffin and Nashika Williams with scout grades of 73, 40 and 40. while these are low, keep in mind that Holston’s scout grade was also low.
in the end, Harper needs a really good recruiting class this year to keep up with Maryland, Duke, UNC and FSU.
wolfonthehill, the women's game last night wasn't as bad as the men's game
Saturday. the women lead for all of the first half except for the last 10 or so seconds. by the end of the first half, it was clear that UCLA was the better team. when one looks at UCLA’s record, one wonders why they weren’t seeded higher.
