Baseball Team Controls Its ACC Tournament Destiny
7.) BC (13-14) (remaining: vs. GT)
8.) NCSU (12-15) (remaining: vs. Duke)
----------------------
9.) UNC (11-16) (remaining: vs. VT)
Should the Pack make it into the ACC tournament, a modestly priced fruit basket should be sent with all due haste to Charlottesville. Not only did Virginia give the Wolfpack a couple of Ws for the standings and the resume a while back, they also swept the Tar Heels over the weekend.
State ends conference play with a Duke team that has been mathematically eliminated from ACC tournament contention. Two-of-three should be good enough, and a sweep might allow them to catch Boston College.

while i doubt State can make the
NCAA’s absent a conference tournament win, a sweep of Duke is a must to maintain a chance. that will not be easy eventhough, as noted above, Duke is not playing for anything other than fun and pride. Duke did take one for Virginia Tech this past weekend.
wondering what Avent was thinking Sunday in that he started a freshman (Ogburn), relieved with a freshman (Tzamtzis) and relieved with another freshman (Roque) before going to Junior Sasser. While Tzamtzis has pitched well at times at Raleigh, his outings at UNC and FSU were very poor. i guess this is were State’s problems lie-bull pen issues. i believe someone pointed that out at the beginning of the year.
i was surprised to see him use Sogard as a reliever on Saturday
That kid usually gets the ball on Sunday, right?
speaking of the velocity of pitches, in
watching UVA and UNC Saturday on Comcast i listened to Hogwood state that Hultzen threw 92 and 93 mph. the box score on the t.v. screen verified that. i watched him pitch when UVA played State in Raleigh. i was slightly taken back when i kept seeing the velocity of his pitches shown as 88 and 89 mph on the scoreboard at State. Jake pitched that night and his velocity was similar. one would wonder if velocities were down becasue it was early in the season; however the State scoreboard showed Jake’s velocity still the same when i watched him pitch against Georgia Tech. something isn’t right. could it be that State’s scoreboard does not register the correct velocity of a pitch? if Jake is actually pitching in the low nineties, his professional baseball chances may be better than i thought. however, i haven’t seen anything to make me think that he should not stay at State for his senior year, and i really hope he does!
one final thought, if State’s scoreboard registers pitches 2-3 mph slower than they are Tramtzis fastball is actually 94 and 95 mph!
i too
was surprised to see Sogard get the call Saturday. looking at the stats at gopack, Sogard has been the normal starter on Sunday. maybe Avent thought Sogard could seal the deal on Saturday. unfortunately Sogard didn’t get the job done. in the past, Sogard has been a reliever.
gopack reported that Drew Polk went 8-10 against FSU. for his reward, he received co-player of the week. really-co player for going 8-10 with two home runs against a top ten team-FSU!
