NC State Is Going To Myrtle Beach
NC State is the #3 seed in a regional hosted by Coastal Carolina.
| 1. (4) Coastal Carolina | |||
| 2. College of Charleston | |||
| 3. N.C. State | |||
| 4. Stony Brook |
Coastal Carolina beat NC State 6-3 back in February.
There's potential for a lot of fireworks in this regional, as three clubs rank in the top ten nationally in home runs. CCU leads the group with 99 HRs, and they also run quite a bit (180 stolen base attempts). Needless to say, they're going to be tough.

Carolina did get in ahead of Boston College
Wish we could trade places—they also got a much better draw than we did.
besides myself, from reading what Avent said with regard
to a team not making the conference tournament but getting into the NCAA tournament, a lot of people are upset about the UNC bid. the coaches at the
ACC tournament seem to think that if a team can get into the NCAA’s without making the conference tournament, why play the conference tournament.
as to the regional, Coastal can’t be happy with State in their regional. State knows them, plays at their field and has beaten them in the past.
one would think that Avent would start Jake in their game against Charleston, but remembering what he has done in the past and his desire to set up his pitching to win the regional as opposed to the first game, it would not surprise me to see Sogard or Mazzoni pitch the first game so that if State wins Jake will be available for Coastal if Coastal wins their first game.
the only option IMO
Would be to switch Mazzoni and Buchanan around so Jake goes Saturday. I don’t think we can chance a start from Sogard on Friday because we absolutely have to start 2-0 if we want to win the regional. Don’t have the pitching to come out of the losers’ bracket.
comments from Avent in the ACCNow:
“It’s kind of, why do you play the ACC Tournament? The ACC Tournament can beat you up, now. Carolina got to sit at home and rest and get in the bigger [tournament]. That’s like Virginia wins the league next year or we win the league next year [in the regular season race] and we just say, ‘Hey, we won’t come to the ACC Tournament, we’ve got a couple of guys banged up. We’ll stay here and rest and get ready for the next round.’
EXACTLY!
I agree with that assesment
to a point. But I think if VA wins the regular season and skips the tournament they hurt themselves more. I have to hope that the committe would see that as more of a negative than going 0-3, and furthermore, I’m not sure that the ACC would even let it happen without serious penalties. The risk in not making the tournament is far greater than the risk going in as an 8 seed. The fact is, both BC and UNC probably should have been in, but BC really crapped out at the end of the year, and made the tournament by virtue of a strong first 3/4 of a season, but when you can’t finish strong it just doesn’t help your case. I don’t think BC hurt themselves in the tournament. Had they gone to the finals, they may have been in the ncaa’s, but otherwise it was unc’s for the taking due to the way both schools finished the year.
I promise. I will never die...

with regard to whom Avent starts against Charleston,
let me first state that Avent has absolutely had me pulling my hair out with regard to his pitching choices in both the ACC tournament and the regionals because i have thought it was most important to win the first game. in the past when Avent was asked why he pitched who he pitched in such situations he has stated that he was trying to win the regional or tournament. i don’t know if it is sad to say, but now i tend to agree with him.
i, like you Backing the Pack, don’t think that we can come out of the loser’s bracket. if Sogard starts against Charleston, then State will have Jake and Cory for games 2 and 3 hopefully in the winner’s bracket.
Sogard pitched well against FSU, so if his arm is rested enough, i could see pitching him.
i'm fine with the logic
Setting his rotation up in a way that gives his team the best chance to win the regional is the approach he should be taking. I just don’t think starting Sogard Friday is the best way to go.
one thing that we haven't touched on,
is the need to juggle the hitting positions as Avent needs to put someone behind Riggins who is somewhat of a threat or State will continue to see Riggins intentionally walked when the need arises-men on base, game on the line.
