Pack vs Heels Rnd.1 @ NC Pro-AM
First time out to the NCCU campus last night to check out the future of Wolfpack and UNC hoops. Although my beloved Pack came up 10 points short on the scoreboard, I did see several positives both expected and not. GB's disappointments other than losing included:
Tracy Smith did not show up even though he was the lone premier senior on the court.
CJ Leslie had a mistaken day dream that he was Bill Lambier and was trying to hit 3's.
If the ball ever made it down low, it never came back out, no matter what.
Positives included:
Harrow showed solid ball handling in the face of good pressure without turn overs.
Zo Brown may be a No Doubt Superstar in the making. Calm under pressure and excellent passing skills.
CJL proved he can get to the rim whenever he wants to.
CJ Williams absolutely has improved tremendously! He was a steady force throughout the game.
Must admit I had a hell of a good time as I got to the gym early and was able to plunder a front row bleacher spot for the action. I do plan to be back next Tuesday for the rematch if....and only if....all NC State participants commit to show. Otherwise, I'll just stay in Johnston County.

I don't know if this format
is conducive for the macrowave dropping the boom.
i followed the game on
the pack insider’s feed. although not there, my guess is that the games are played with 12 minute quarters with no clock stopage.
different sites had different takes on the game. all agreed that Barnes and Bullock are going to be good and tuff to handle although one site thought Leslie was a much better athelete than Barnes. Riddick&Reynolds thought that Harrow had trouble due to being locked down defensively while the pack insider and this post thought he played very well. pack insider felt that he should have handled the ball more while also thinking that McGladrey lost becasue Brown and Williams turned the ball over too much. most sites thought Leslie was awesome. this is the only post which mentioned Leslie shooting too many threes. maybe a good reason why McGladrey lost.
yes, everyone noted this game wasn’t made for the macrowave.
i took a look at the very good video at the WRAL website. what i saw was much play reminding me of NBA play. that is a player used the bump to move his defender back until he could make his move-especially Bullock. i don’t know if one can get away with much of this in the ACC-especially a guard. ACC Now thought Bullock would be difficult to handle as a guard in the ACC due to his size-six seven and one eighty five. that he weighs only one eighty five makes me think other wise-not unless he has awesome quickness. Harrow looked pretty good on the video i referenced.
Re: Harrow, Bullock, Tracy
sbas: Good point about Bullock backing Brown down by using his body. I can’t imagine that he would be allowed to do so as much in the ACC, nor do I see Roy running a lot of halfcourt isolation sets where he just lets folks try to take their man all the way to the basket. Further, since defense is rarely as emphasized or organized as it will be in the ACC, I can’t see Bullock being able to back his way into the paint without receiving some additional defensive attention.
As to Harrow, I thought he was pressing too much. A lot of folks I heard after the game were surprised at his size and feel that will prevent him from having a great impact this year, but I don’t think it will. Or perhaps, not as much as is assumed. He’ll need to get stronger, but he’s SO elusive and has such great vision, I don’t think he’ll be impeded much at the point. He’ll be able to do what Sidney asks of him. As for Tuesday, I just think he was trying too hard to live up to State fans’ lofty expectations.
The Macrowave was on Power Level 1, but it sounds like his girlfriend was turned away at the door (like everyone else), so that may have been in his head a bit. Also, since these games were essentially five simultaneous games of 1-on-1, it didn’t suit his game where play is isolated for him (i.e., the lane was clogged too much for him to go to work). The times he matched up with Henson with space to operate, he certainly held his own.
