as i stated in preceding posts,
i really thought State was going to win this one. i don’t know how it looked to those watching the ESPN2 feed, but from my seat in section 127, row Q, a lack of effort for at least 2/3’s of the game was seen. there is good reason to think that the team just went through the motions for most of the game and has mailed in the year.
the team had high expectations and with failure comes maybe a lack of effort, of course even before the certainty of failure lack of effort reared its ugly head-Wisconsin and those two games against very bad teams around Christmas. So typical of Lowe’s teams.
Tony Haynes and Mark Thomas of the post game radio show are in denial with regard to Lowe’s inability to coach at the college level, and due to his poor record as a head coach in the NBA, at the NBA level.
Haynes and Thomas think its a learning experience for a young team with regard to playing hard, but the team started two seniors and played a junior for over 30 minutes. no, its not a learning experience, its “a lack of coaching” experience.

Yep, that’s how it came off on television.
And Haynes is in denial because he’s paid to be.
yea, you are right about Haynes.
Lowe needs to go becasue he has created an atmosphere of losing that only a coaching change will alleviate. Had State’s football team had another losing season, O’Brien would have been in the same boat.
after 5 years of losing, its almost impossible if not impossible to turn things around.
Wow
look at those TO %‘s, some serious lack of defense going on. It was kind of funny to hear Patrick and Elmore pretty much bash Lowe’s coaching for the full 40 minutes of game time.
I just don’t understand the lack of emotion and effort. Basketball is fun (right Defilipo?), but these guys play like someone just asked them to go up in front of the crowd and solve a differential equation. Anytime the littlest thing doesn’t go their way the hangdog expressions come out, the shoulders slump, and the energy decreases even further.
If nothing else, I want the new coach to have these guys with their hands up and active on defense, and not half assing it back to cover their man after they have hedged out on a screen.
I honestly think we'd be better off with NO coach
Just throw the ball out there & play street ball… maybe the guys would at least care, try, and have fun. How much worse could it really be????
Next coaching profile
Just because they are ranked and we are not…any chance Steve Morrill from Utah State can show up in the coaching reviews on the blog? I feel like his teams have been in the news alot the past few years at the edge of the rankings. Plus on the Utah State homepage it states they pounded the Wolf Pack last night (it felt appropriate, since our Wolfpack was pounded too).
Patrick/Elmore versus Haynes/Thomas
I take no pleasure whatsoever in hearing Patrick & Elmore bash our coach and therefore our school. Haynes & Thomas are admittedly homers, but have their hearts in the right place.
Yow must be watching the same broadcast we are – hearing Patrick & Elmore. She must also read the same media we do. (breaking & entering / drunk driving) I hope it is killing her, the same as it is the rest of us. I have to believe she is preparing a manifesto for her first major hire, including:
1. Team discipline – character counts!
2. Play hard every second you are priviledged to be on the court – otherwise that priviledge will be rescinded
3. Defence is a priority – you don’t play it, you don’t play at all
4. Play within the offense – No bigs pitching up threes or bringing the ball up court – bigs should be getting offensive rebounds ( a concept that apparently has yet to be introduced). Try setting a screen (another new concept, it appears.)
I hope Yow’s standards for a BBall coach start with Gary Williams and go up from there. She watched him for a long time, so should have a pretty good idea of qualities you want in a coach that will run a successful program. We don’t want the minimum standard to be ‘somebody better than Coach Lowe.’
Coach Lowe has given us his best. He leaves the program in better shape than he found it. But even he must realize that he’s hit his ceiling.
