Box Score

State did tonight what it has done all year--took care of the basketball but shot poorly and lost. There was some irony to this outcome; the turnover and rebounding problems that plagued the majority of the Sidney Lowe era were not issues tonight, but the end was as obvious as ever. The Pack finished the night with a +9 turnover margin and attempted 80 shots to Maryland's 58. A couple of years ago, these results would have meant an easy win for NC State.

Tonight, this year, they made little difference because the shooting wasn't there. It wasn't there because they could not execute the open looks they had and wasted too many possessions with horrible, contested shots. Javi Gonzalez, Ryan Harrow, CJ Leslie, Lorenzo Brown ... each made room for laughably contrived scoring opportunities, and that is not the sort of avalanche from which the team's defense could recover.

And thus ends the Macrowave era

It goes out with a fizzle… not a mushroom cloud.

It did

However, go out with him visibly pissed that CJ Lazily took a terrible shot during crunchtime that clearly ruined the comeback momentum. While I think our gameplan in the last 3 minutes was “get Tracy the ball” , I am not delusional to the point to think that it mattered much anyway. It just gave me a glimpse into what might have been one of our problems all year, ala JJ Hickson, team chemistry, etc.

I have a question about Brown

will he ever become a realistic shooting threat? If people had to respect his shot more, he would pretty much be unstoppable, right?

Onto the coaching search and state fans blowing up the internet!!! Excelsior!

i am not going to make

any comments about shot selection last night as that subject has been adequately covered by BTP and previous posters.
my first comment is that Maryland should not take too much from their win over State. the win does not mean that Maryland is any better than they have been in their previous three games. the win only means that Maryland continues to use State as their whipping boy. State always gets Marylands very best be it football or basketball-at least at this time.
i have an issue with Wood being knocked down continuously after three point shots without a foul call. it is so obvious that even Len Elmore commented about it after Wood was again knocked down late in the second half by a Maryland defender. Elmore basically said Wood should be used to it becasue it has happened through out the year.
why no foul call? i am assuming that the knock downs occur after the shot has been released such that the ref thinks that the knock down didn’t effect the shot. this is bs. would a ref allow a defender to knock down a player who doesn’t have the ball or has the ball and is not shooting? of course not, so why allow a defender to knock down a three point shooter after the shot is released?
refs are suppose to make decisions with regard to contact taking into consideration whether an unfair advantage has occurred. in Wood’s case last night a big unfair advantage occurred becasue Maryland was able to run down to their end of the court for an easy score. one State defender was on his butt due to the knock down.
in all cases when a three point shooter is knocked down a foul should be called because the knockdown creates an unfair advantage for the defensive team.
