Gary Williams Is Retiring

GREENSBORO, NC - MARCH 10: Head coach Gary Williams of the Maryland Terrapins communicates with the team during the first half of the game against the North Carolina State Wolfpack in the first round of the 2011 ACC men's basketball tournament at the Greensboro Coliseum on March 10, 2011 in Greensboro, North Carolina. (Photo by Streeter Lecka/Getty Images)

Per Jeff Goodman:

Williams, who has spent the past 22 seasons at his alma mater and won the national title in 2002, will make it official on Friday afternoon, sources told FOXSports.com.

Wow. Now Williams can direct all of his efforts toward sabotaging any and all Debbie Yow-led coaching searches from here on. The real bummer is this deprives us of what was sure to be a must-see Maryland/NC State basketball game in the RBC Center next season.

Forced

I’m thinking this was the option he was given…Resignation/Retirement/Fired. Word has been burning up there before and after Yow’s departure that GW’s time was limited unless of rapid improvement.

Sorry not so

Gary and Kevin Anderson were tight. Plus FoG (Friends of Gary) much more powerful than you know. He was nearly untouchable. Just ask your current AD-she tried-she failed-and I’m not talking about your coaching search.

by settleten on May 5, 2011 9:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Forced? Are you serious?

Gary would go out when he wanted, how he wanted. He’s staying on as an associate AD. This has been in the works for a while now.

Maybe next time, do a little research.

Since the boys in blue aren’t paying much attention to us these days – it really would have been fun to start the “battle of the red.”

from the Washington Post:

"I started thinking about it last year after we tied Duke for the ACC title," Williams told The Post’s John Feinstein in a telephone interview. "I’ve been doing this a long time and I thought it might be time to do something else. After [Debbie] Yow left, I thought I might enjoy it more this year and I really did like working with Kevin Anderson. He’s a straight shooter. But I think I’d been worn down by the previous 15 years [with Yow]. It grinds on you.

Wow! he tooks his shots at Yow.

His New Job

He’s staying on as Asst AD. THAT would have been a marriage made in hell.

Why now?

Weird timing. Not sad to see the sorry bastard go however. I know Maryland will get someone just as hateable to replace him.

Coach Names

http://www.testudotimes.com/2011/5/5/2156035/maryland-coach-gary-williams-retirement-snap-reactions#comments

They are already reeling off their coaching wishes

Sean Miller
Brad Stevens
Shaka Smart
Jay Wright
Mark Few
Mark Turgeon

That list seems so familiar

by wardncsu on May 5, 2011 6:33 PM EDT reply actions

LOL

Except for half of those guys have signed extensions.

I could see Turgeon. The others, not so much.

Again, with this timing, it is going to really screw the other school and the period for moving is done with. So that coach really has to be looking to get out if he makes that move. Miller, Stevens, Smart, Wright, and Few…no way.

Lonergan from Vermont. Calling it right now.

by TVP on May 5, 2011 6:36 PM EDT reply actions

Really? You all are LOLing at that list?

We LOLed at you, except those people actually want to come to Maryland. We thought we were an upper-2nd tier hire. But coaches are all saying they’re interested and analysts are saying it’s a top 10 job. That’s not us saying that, others are. Don’t be surprised when we have another awesome coach in College Park in a few weeks.

by Dave Tucker on May 6, 2011 12:19 AM EDT up reply actions

You're delusional, man

Stop drinking the Kool-Aid. Not saying you won’t get a good coach… but “those people actually want to come to Maryland”? And you know this……… how?

Put down the crack pipe & step away.

PS – Steven – why do UMd trolls seem to show up here moreso than any other school’s fans? I’m growing to like them less with each post…

by wolfonthehill on May 6, 2011 6:47 AM EDT up reply actions

i have been wondering that myself

It’s nice of them to think of us at a time like this.

by Akula Wolf on May 6, 2011 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions

LOL @ the drunk poster

Yea, everyone is lining up to go coach at MD. Which coaches? Which analysts? Its going to be an assistant ‘interim’ coach who ends up with the job this season, then a coaching search after next season. Bare cupboard means no top coach at an established program will even consider making the jump to hopefully rebuild a devastated program.

Good job Gary!

by riddickfield on May 6, 2011 7:57 AM EDT up reply actions

No, LOLing at Gary Williams quitting right now

But also LOLing at the list, now that you mention it.

I'll add in an LOL

at the idea that this “has been in the works for a while now” … ok, so MD planned to have Gary announce this at approximately the worst time possible. Makes perfect sense to me

Be interesting to see who they hire

My guess is they get Brey or someone like him.

Why now? Was it the recruits? Already giving up on “rapid improvement”?

Its so Gary has more time for his real passion in life

sabotaging everything that Debbie Yow does in life.

I hope that um has to hire a janitor that once cleaned a basketball court to be their next coach because everyone of value is locked in at this point. Great timing

Yeah

Ralph had such a better time of it under Anderson. Listen, we don’t give a shit what you think about Yow, and believe it or not we had nothing to do with hiring her at ncsu.

by Akula Wolf on May 5, 2011 9:03 PM EDT up reply actions

That is THE question

Tampa. It leaves Maryland and whomever they hire as coach scrambling. It is currently the “Quiet Period” (campus visits only) with multiple “Dead Periods” coming up. I am not sure how much that will hamper a new coach in keeping recruits or bringing in new ones.

they aren't wrong

Now, you make a hire commensurate with that opinion and then we’ll talk.

by Akula Wolf on May 5, 2011 8:19 PM EDT up reply actions

maybe this will shed some light

as to whether yow had any influence on those guys not coming to state. if they split with their current programs at this point to go to UM, you’d have to think there was some truth to the reputation issue. why else would these guys turn down state and go to UM?

by TX_Wolfpacker on May 5, 2011 8:49 PM EDT up reply actions

True

Great point, we shall soon see if “not working under Yow” is true or rumor from Gary and his fans. Wonder what Maryland’s salary range will be for this hire.

by Tampa-Pack on May 5, 2011 11:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Here's how I'd rank the jobs in the ACC:

(1) UNC by a mile
(2) Maryland – arguably the best facility in the conference, good fans (even if they aren’t good people), fertile recruiting area.
(3) (tie) NCSU and GT – different pluses and minuses, both very good in their own way. GT unfortunately made a crap hire because of their financial situation. Our hire was OK, probably could have gotten a more high profile guy if our AD hadn’t flubbed things somewhat.
(5) Duke – I’m sure most will disagree, but K IS Duke basketball. He’s probably the best coach in basketball at any level. The next guy has almost no chance of replicating that, even though the fans will expect him to. And the further you get away from the K mystique and success, the more Duke starts to look like Wake Forest. Speaking of which…
(6) (tie) Wake and UVA – UVA made a very nice hire last time. It seems like that should be a good job but no one has every really done anything there.

7-12: the rest in some order.

by TVP on May 5, 2011 9:25 PM EDT up reply actions

As a Terp fan I disagree

Duke is a better job-I fear the day Brad Stevens replaces you know who. That could be really bad for the rest of the league. Duke/UNC 1a/1b…Maryland 3rd.

by settleten on May 5, 2011 10:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Even though Gary

is a great coach, he had seemingly become so disinterested in recruiting and burned so many bridges in the Baltimore/DC area that I just didn’t see Maryland being much more than a perennial bubble team for the remainder of his tenure. With the right hire, a guy who will mend those bridges in local recruiting circles, Maryland can be a force again. I actually hope they make a really good hire. I am tired of watching shitty ACC basketball, and have hoped with every ACC job opening that it results in improvement for that school.

by PACKHOOLIGAN on May 6, 2011 8:14 AM EDT reply actions

not me

I hope they hire Matt Doh’ reincarnated. I’m Ok with every team in the ACC being horrible other than NC State. Just win baby!

MD has some parallels to the state job. I’d agree that with the right person it is a good spot, but the national media will shout about “well they have georgetown in their backyard, raar, raar, raar”

by ginger avenger on May 6, 2011 1:02 PM EDT up reply actions

this is a big reason why opinion of the job is high

All that talent in the area that has been funneled elsewhere while GW was there, yet they were still a good program. They get somebody that can/wants to keep those kids at home….

by Akula Wolf on May 6, 2011 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions

It seems like people

could look at it the other way as well. Gary Williams is widely considered a great coach, but he has struggled mightily since 2003 to keep Maryland relevant. One would think that a great coach could consistently win big at a “great” program.

by PACKHOOLIGAN on May 6, 2011 3:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Totally Agree!

Sick to death of hearing “ACC is down” … “Duke, UNC & the rest” … “ACC is a 2 school conf” …etc… I want every single one of the new coaches to come in an absolutely kill it. I want us to be the scariest league in the land again.
And if MG can’t cut it, ESPN can have him back.

by Wolphpack on May 6, 2011 3:39 PM EDT up reply actions

But ...

If I had my druthers, MG would be baddest on the block.

by Wolphpack on May 6, 2011 3:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Miller revealed his hand last month...

A name that first surfaced as a potential replacement for Gary Williams during the NC State search was Sean Miller. Miller was believed by many close to the Wolfpack program to be their top target and a realistic option given the fact he had coached down in Raleigh under Herb Sendek and brother Archie played at State. But it was during this search that Miller apparently revealed to some close to him that Maryland was in fact the job he coveted should it open up.

"firegary, go sit under the basket at one of Montrose's games next year so...
JA can flush one right down your throat you little trouble making hatin’ weasel…"

by bball purist on May 6, 2011 6:05 PM EDT reply actions

I mean, really...

… just substitute “Rick Barnes” for “Sean Miller”, and “NC State” for “Maryland”, and we’ve heard it all before. Hell, we even heard it about Miller about 2 months ago.

Good luck, purist…

by wolfonthehill on May 8, 2011 7:00 AM EDT up reply actions

A more reasoned post from me on this subject

Trolling the UMD fans aside…

It looks like this may happen. If so, it would seem to confirm much of what I (and others) had heard during the time before and during our search: Miller did want out of Arizona, his family doesn’t like it there, he wanted an ACC job, and he expressed interest in our job through back channels. I was emailing this info to Steven during the search, he can vouch for me.

The question that remains is, why Maryland and not here?

Didn’t want to work for Yow? Herb/Gary badmouthing us? More $$$ than what we could offer (Under Armour)? He’s thinking more rationally and less emotionally now that the glow of the Elite 8 run has worn off? The Arizona AD is not coming through on promises he made? Wife’s nagging finally got to him? Archie nepotism issue is not a problem anymore? He just thinks Maryland is better?

I could see any or all of these being the reason.

But if it happens, then congrats to Maryland for pulling of a great hire. I for one won’t be bothered by it. Although he was not on our radar during the search, I view Gottfried as roughly equal to those that I considered to be the best available options, and I think he’ll do well here.
