Multiple Reports: Butch Davis Out At UNC
Butch Davis has ben told in meetings w chancellor as AD that the process of termination had begun
According to CBSSports.com sources, Butch Davis has been fired as head coach of North Carolina, players have been told.
Sources tell me that Butch Davis has indeed been fired as head coach of UNC football as early as this morning.
THF:
Inside Carolina initially broke the story saying that UNC officials refused to confirm or deny Davis was still the head coach following a meeting between chancellor Holden Thorp and the UNC Board of Trustees. A not so insignificant factor in this is the fact a new BOT took over today and without noted Davis supporter Bob Winston who rotated off with the expiration of his term.
Per sources, there is no new information connecting Butch Davis to the investigation, but new leadership wanted change.
University of North Carolina Chancellor Holden Thorp announced this evening that Butch Davis has been dismissed as head coach of the Carolina football program. Davis was informed by Thorp and Director of Athletics Dick Baddour of the decision."To restore confidence in the University of North Carolina and our football program, it's time to make a change," said Thorp. "What started as a purely athletic issue has begun to chip away at this University's reputation. I have been deliberate in my approach to understanding this situation fully, and I have worked to be fair to everyone involved. However, I have lost confidence in our ability to come through this without harming the way people think of this institution. Our academic integrity is paramount and we must work diligently to protect it. The only way to move forward and put this behind us is to make a change."

Did we sound THAT delusional
talking about prospective Basketball coaches? One of the comments over there on the crazy board actually said…..let’s go get Urban Meyer….. I could hardly bring myself to type that.
i'm afraid we did, yes
Although we didn’t have the pall of sanctions overhead, merely the pall of suckitude.
It's hard to escape the conclusion
that a random poster named “WufWuf1” on pack pride got Davis fired after he figured out the McAdoo plagiarism.
Crazy.
thanks
that’s pretty funny.
although, with how Davis has fared vs. NC State, you’d think pack fans would want to keep him around.

yes, but...
In the abstract, I’d rather Davis have stayed and continued to embarass UNC.
But what this was really about was getting even. The perception among many (most? all?) Pack fans has always been that UNC’s “public ivy” and “The Carolina Way” images were a sham: they had gotten away with bending/breaking the rules for years, whereas we have been wandering in the desert for 20 years after getting crucified for what turned out to be fairly minor violations in the Valvano era. Due to easy access to records on the internet now, these folks saw an opening to bloody UNC’s nose and pounced.
Well, you asked for it...
Now you’ve got it… I just hope that the UNC screws up their football program as well as we screwed up our basketball program in the late 80’s, 90’s, and 2000’s. Man, that’s a long time to pay for minor indiscretions.
Will we see better recruiting by TOB since he doesn’t have to recruit against a semi-pro team?
i think the timing is going to hurt a lot
It remains to be seen what the 2011 guys do—they should be let out of their scholarships without penalty, though I have no idea about the protocol there. No clue how many would want to jump ship, either.
I think UNC completely boned itself for 2012 at minimum. They’re going to go into October without knowing what the NCAA is going to do to them, and they’ll be recruiting with an interim HC. That’s gonna be tough.
VT beat writer posting quotes from recruits who picked UNC.
“They said that it would just all go away in a couple weeks.”
Whoopsies!
They meant their football program lol
I love the Steelers.

The timing is absolutely
awful for unc. It could not happen to a better bunch.
I guess this WILL be over with by Friday
How will it affect recruiting? LOL!
They must have seen something in those phone records they are supposed to be releasing.
Timing is terrible. Going to be a train wreck this season with a interim head coach and trying to hire another with probation hanging over their head like Damacles’ sword.

It’s a killer. I doubt quality coaching candidates are going to want to commit before they know the NCAA’s ruling, and that may not be known until December/January. So 2012 recruiting class is toast.
2012 at a minimum
UNC will hardly be in the front of the line in terms of getting the sexy hires, and if the rumor is true that Roy has a clause in his contract that keeps him the highest paid coach on campus they won’t be able to just buy a coach either.

Saw this link to the N&O at SFN
And, I got a chuckle out of the ad that came up on the story.

Seemed fitting somehow. :)

It's a shame really.
I liked what Chief had done for UNX football, and was hoping he would stick around for a few more years.

The entertainment factor
of the unc football program just took a big hit.

Thorp looked completely shell-shocked
He was red-faced, sweating, almost visibly shaking. Seems to be that he & Baddour took a complete ass-reaming from the Board, then had to go do the firing. I’m guessing he’s feeling he’s not long for that campus… and he shouldn’t be. He’s in completely over his head. The only things that qualify him for that job are his name (does ANY name fit unc-ch better than “Holden Thorp”?) and his appearance (he’d get his ass kicked at State, just for sport).
one has to ask:
what took them so long? and that is being asked quite a bit.
i told my friend at church, a UNC fan, many months ago that Davis would eventually be fired. we just recenlty discussed that possibility again. he felt Butch was safe and should not be fired. myself and another thought Davis should be fired.
i have always felt that the academics side of UNC would not allow Davis to continue as coach.
i have read that the McAdoo paper is a copy of a paper which has been turned in numerous times in that particular class, a class which basketball players take. if true, would not that be interesting?
No other ending
How did Butch not know this was coming? The timing (as stated numerous times) is absolutely absurd, but there was no other available outcome. Look how bad that program was in disarray and so many things tied back to Butchie and how do you not resign? I’m disappointed in the timing, and I’m even more disappointed in BD, because he didn’t man up and resign. He even claimed responsibility for everything at the ACC kickoff, and I think that was what the BOT used to say, “See, he did it! Fire him.”
I almost posted
the exact same thing.
It is inevitable.
