Glass Half Full? Correctable Problems? I'll Be That Guy...!

Basketball gives you the leeway to suffer some setbacks early and correct it in time for conference play/NCAA run...but our tangible problems are correctable over the course of the season...and our other problems just need an emotional upgrade...

Turnovers: Lack of chemistry as a unit and carelessness early on in games is the culprit here. Once Lo Brown lets the offense come to him and our freshmen start to gain a comfort level we'll reduce this significantly

FT Shooting: Missing this many FTs is mainly mental. There's nothing wrong with their form. Guys need to calm down and concentrate on the one shot, not on what happens if they miss. To counteract their carelessness elsewhere, they appear to be feeling the pressure when at the line. Yet even our worst FT shooter can show confidence. Look at Rich at the end of the UNCA game...he locked in knocked the first one down...came out of a timeout and calmly knocked down the second no problem ...he looked like a career 85% FT shooter out there with no fear, no weight on his shoulders, just taking care of business...that has to be the mindset from bell to bell...

Consistent Defense: Look even the best teams have occasional defensive lapses and at risk of sounding too simplistic, opponents make tough shots sometimes. So we've had periods of very good defense, but guys seem tentative in being as aggressive as they were last year unless they are in a pinch. Maybe its the gauntlet of ACC refs that have affected their philosophy, but closing out on shooters and help defense/stopping the ball are some deficiencies. Due to our lack of depth in the backcourt, we can't play 40 Minutes of Hell though 3/4 court press would help. Its all about effort...the fundamentals are there. Our guys have to be emotionally invested in defense which creates TOs, missed shots, and leads directly to the easy buckets in our transition game...speaking of emotion...

Emotional Leadership: When is the last time we've had a true emotional leader at NC State? Jules? This is the least correctable, b/c none of our 4 vets are emotional guys frankly. It's almost unfair really to ask them to feign something they've never been...they are just very even keeled. Watch the games, Lo Brown is often talking to and encouraging the freshmen but he rarely shows much fire...same from Wood (almost zero)...and Leslie (ditto). Rich has to be that guy...he's the closest we have to a guy who can get this team lifted after a big play to jump start a run. He even mentioned it in the post-game interview. Still...we may never have this aspect this season...

Season-wise, we have a lot of time...unfortunately a road game against the legit #4 (+ ?) team in the country and a "neutral" court game against a better than expected UCONN...doesn't give us a ton of time to correct these things quickly...but hey...at least our problems aren't as bad as most teams in the country...which is, well...playing basketball...
