Miami Defeats Duke: Good or Bad?
Miami beat Duke yesterday (Feb. 5) at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Is this outcome good or bad for NC State?
Positives:
With the win Miami moves solidly into the Top 50 in the RPI at #38 (numbers from CBSSports.com), giving NC State its first win over a Top 50 opponent
NC State plays Miami twice this season and Duke only once, Duke was always going to be considered a good win/not bad loss, but now Miami could serve as TWO good wins if they manage to stay Top 50.
Negatives:
Miami and NC State might just be fighting it out for a 5th NCAA bid for the ACC. Miami just landed their signature win, something which NC State does not have. I know, I know, State's hopes for a tourney bid probably ended with the loss to UVA, but let a guy speculate will ya?
Discussion:
Both teams still have a lot of work to do, and one could easily lump Virginia into this group, although I think Virginia has a stronger resume at this point than Miami or State. All three of those teams still have multiple chances for wins against the top 3 ACC teams, and also plenty of opportunities to stumble. NC State definitely has the worst loss of the bunch, with the home loss to Georgia Tech (does anyone remember that game even taking place?). At this juncture I think the biggest thing missing from NC State's tourney resume is good wins, so I am hoping Miami can stay in the Top 50, that State can get another win against them, and at least 1 win against UNC, Duke, or FSU. So keep doing your thing Miami, State can still control its own destiny.
p.s. I am just happy that it is February and I can still write that last line.

Good.
It adds one more decent team in the ACC we can build our resume with. One more win against Miami coupled with at least one win against Duke, UNC, or FSU might be enough to get us into the tournament as long as we don’t have another bad loss.
If you disagree with my opinion, I will take it personal and hate you forever.
I think
youre being too pessimistic about the virginia loss ending our bid hopes. certainly it was a game we should have won and we let it get away, like so many early season games this year; but keep in mind that we have a relatively easy path to 21 wins if we take care of the “easy” teams ahead of us plus three chances at a top 25 win, two of which come at home. say we get one of those wins and win out our easy games – do that and we might get another look at UVA come ACC tourney. a win there and we definitely secure a bid.

I agree
that it is possible. I just know a lot of people viewed the UVA game as a game where State could show it was a tournament quality team, and they didn’t do it. But like I said, we do control our own destiny at this point. Just win baby.

This has to help us
I honestly think that Dook is grossly over-rated this year. I’ve never seen a team with more talent and less ability. The Plumlee brothers are pretty much a waste in the middle. Now with that all being said, I have no expectations of beating them.
GT is a bad loss, no doubt, but not sure if its the worst… I could make an arguement for UVA losing to TCU (TCU lost to Norfolk St).
i think it's good
Although it doesn’t matter too much since we’re going win all of the games left on the schedule.
I'm going to wait to form an opinion
until after Keeping it Heel has weighed in on this issue.
I don't think
we’re competing against Miami alone for a bid. We’re competing against Miami and every other bubble team out there. It’s not Miami or us.
So it’s a good thing. Ringing affirmative.
As of late, that last line has only been able to be typed in February
in reference to that year’s football team. Glad to see it up there for basketball!
Don't forget now
that UVA lost to Virginia freaking Tech. #comments
Actually
UVA and Miami both have eerily similar resumes to date. UVA has their win over Michigan with their loss to VPI, Miami now has their win over Duke with their loss to Ole Miss.
We have our loss to GaTech, and hopefully can pick up a marquee win. As someone stated, it’s not an even trade team for team here. We could all be dancing. Although I feel like someone will stumble (again) out of this group, hopefully it’s not us.
I could see
all 3 of these teams stumbling.
There is something less than a 50-50 chance that the tourney will start today, but...
we would definitely not be in if it did. If Joe Lunardi is correct, and of course he is, we have zero wins against tourney teams.
Yeah, I saw that. I guess I am disagreeing with him. Please don’t tell him. I only have 3 semesters left before I become a certified bracketologist.

Can someone explain to me how Miami was 10 spots better than us before this dook win
I’ve looked at who they’ve played and who they’ve lost to, and I don’t get it. Not only did we beat them in Miami, but we’ve played a better schedule, too. I could really use some help here.
Hell, how are they 20 spots better than us now? This is f’ing ridiculous.
I think the cachet of a top-50 RPI road win makes this a positive for us
This makes the Miami home game all the more critical (though really every game is critical now). A sweep looks very good.
Does the committee still look at road/neutral wins?
Hey Steven
I just noticed your boy Tim Miles has CSU in the RPI top 25
yeah and Joe Lunardi has the Rams out of the tourney in his latest projection
No respect for art in its time.
The Miami win
is great for us if we “take care of business” and win one in the ACC tourny…we are also assuming that The U won’t stumble themselves…so from now on…outside of our game with them in Raleigh we should be “All About The U”
I’ve a strong feeling that I won’t be resting easy until the final buzzer sounds in Blacksburg with us up by at least 1 point…and even then I’ll be diverting my nerves to Atlanta…oooh to be a State fan…
UVA hurt bad
but if we can somehow beat Duke, FSU, or UNC then it won’t matter, we’ll get in if we take care of business against everyone else and win at least one game in the tourney, especially if its against a quality team like UVA.
I love the Steelers.
