If you wanna be good, ya gotta look good

Brothers, it's time to take a stand. Let's bring our uniforms out of the dark.

Last time I checked, NC State's colors are Red and White. I don't understand why we feel the need to add black to all of our uniforms, especially when there are so many things you can do with just red and white. I know a lot of fans think black is cool and everything, but to me, it shouldn't be a primary color on our uniforms. I'm ok with a little black outlining on lettering/numbering here and there, but I don't think we should ever wear black socks or black shoes/cleats, let alone have black jerseys. In the "athletics aesthetics" world, such inclusion of black on the uniform without prior history of black being a team color is known as "black for black's sake," or BFBS.

Our football and basketball teams have fallen victim to this horrible phenomenon. Both teams consistently don black socks and black shoes, no matter what uniform they are wearing. Since when did black shoes and socks go with a strictly red and white uniform? Both teams have also sported black uniforms this past season, which to me is a terrible look for us.

A side note - our marching band looks especially bad in their black uniforms. They would look infinitely better in a predominately white get-up.

In addition to this problem concerning black on uniforms, our basketball jerseys have taken a serious turn for the worse. An on-going trend in the college sports world is for a major uniform manufacturer to design a "cookie-cutter" template for basketball uniforms, then apply it to multiple schools it has under contract. In our case, Adidas has designed a terrible looking, bland uniform. While it may not be exactly like other schools' uniforms, it is obviously part of Adidas' corporate branding scheme (See Kansas, etc). It pays no homage to our glory days, except for the word STATE across the chest. Where is our identity? Is this not a school with a rich basketball history and a unique identity and sense of pride? If we truly want to be a perennial top-25 national powerhouse basketball school, we should look the part!

Are we the Red and White from State? Or are we the red, white, and black from Adidas?

What say you guys?
