Raleigh, N.C. - NC State baseball scored a 4-1 win over the Czech Republic in a 10-inning scrimmage on Sunday at Doak Field at Dail Park, behind a 2-for-3 performance from newcomer Bubby Riley and a combined 14 strikeouts from the Wolfpack pitching staff.
State opened the scoring with two runs in the first on RBIs from Riley and Logan Ratledge. The Pack extended the lead to 3-0 in the sixth. State led 3-0 at the end of the ninth. Both teams scored once in the 10th.
Pack starter Carlos Rodon earned the win on two perfect innings with three strikeouts. Logan Jernigan relieved him for two innings of one-hit ball, striking out a pair. Brad Stone was the next man out of the bullpen, striking out three over two scoreless innings. Andrew Woeck fanned the first three batters he faced in two perfect frames.
Trea Turner went 2-for-4 with two runs and a stolen base. Chance Shepard sent a double off the left field wall for his only hit of the game. Jake Fincher turned in a 1-for-2, one run, one RBI performance after starting in center.
NC State enjoyed strong performances from several newcomers. Riley, a JUCO transfer from Delgado CC in New Orleans, started in left as one of three new faces in the Wolfpack lineup. He finished 2-for-3 with an RBI. Freshman Preston Palmeiro started at first and went 1-for-3. Freshman Andrew Knizner started at third.
In addition to those new starters, junior Luke Voiron and freshmen Will Raynor, Kyle Cavanaugh, Garrett Suggs, Markel Jones, Nathan Hood, and Matthew Vernon saw action on the afternoon. Suggs singled in his lone at-bat. Voiron scored Suggs with a sac fly to right in his only plate appearance. Hood singled in the eighth and made a diving catch into the left field wall on a deep fly ball in the ninth.
The Wolfpack will host one more public scrimmage at the end of October. Details for that intrasquad scrimmage will be released on GoPack.com and @NCStateBaseball as soon as they are finalized.
