State got a big road win last night at Northwestern in the Big Ten Challenge for the women.
The NC State women's basketball team (9-1) picked up its first true road win of the season on Thursday night, earning a one-sided victory over Big Ten foe Northwestern (6-2) in the 2013 Big Ten/ACC Challenge at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
The win was the third in a row for State and marks the program's first 9-1 start to a season since the 2000-01 campaign.
"This was a great win on the road," said head coach Wes Moore. "In their last game, they beat DePaul, who is ranked 25th in the country. For us to come in after that and get a win on the road is really nice."
Three NC State student-athletes scored in double figures in the win, as Markeisha Gatling (20 points - game high), Kody Burke (16), and Krystal Barrett (14) had very successful offensive outings. Gatling scored her 20 points on 8-11 shooting from the field and Burke was just one rebound shy of her 13th career double-double.
Northwestern, with a current WarrenNolan RPI of 57, at the end of week five had a WarrenNolan RPI of 27. State had at the end of week five a WarrenNolan RPI of 99. With the win over Northwestern, State's RPI is 57.
Beating Northwestern makes up for the unexpected loss to Wright State in the Showcase, State's one and only loss. State's next big test is a home game December 20th against LSU which has a WarrenNolan RPI of 8. This game is scheduled to be shown on ESPN 3.
Noting that six-five Gatling had 20 points on 8-11 shooting, one can write it's good to have a legit center. With six-two Burke scoring 16 points, State can be very strong inside when both Gatling and Burke play well and the team gets the ball to them.
