Chip's Right: Its Bye, Bye Harper- and Rightly So

After beating number 19 Florida State Thursday night, who beat UNC today (Sunday), State returned home and allowed the tenth place team in the ACC, Georgia Tech, a team with a losing record overall, to beat them 79-70 on Play for Kay, Hoops for Hope day at Reynolds on Kay Yow's court. Kody Burke who scored 26 against FSU and who is State's leading scorer had a big fat zero points in 15 minutes of unspectacular (and that is putting it mildly) play.

Many of us get frustrated by the men's uneven play. I likewise get frustrated by the women's uneven play. Of all games, State should win this one especially against a team as poor as Georgia Tech.

Was it the new pink uniforms Harper broke out before the game, the players being excited to wear them, was it the hype of the game, or is it the fact that Harper has not been able to prepare her team for the trapping defense Georgia Tech plays? It was Harper's job to get them ready to win this important game, and she did not. One can compare GaTech's coach and Harper and in doing so will immediately note the difference in intensity between the two. Georgia Tech wanted this one more than State, and it showed.

Hopefully, I will refuse to be taken in by any other win by this team even if its against UNC next Sunday. Twice, no three times, I have fallen for the "this team could be good"; once at the beginning of the year; once before the Boston College game; and once after the FSU game. For me its game over.

Some thoughts on our men's basketball team: State has taken much flak in the media for its close losses and close wins. It now looks that State is really no different than Miami or Duke. After Duke beat State handily, Duke has struggled beating B.C. 62-61; beating UNC at home 73-68; and losing to Maryland 83-81. Duke has had a hard time following that high level of intensity and play against State with similar efforts against the following three teams. Miami beat Clemson 45-43 at Clemson on a last seconds three point shot. Miami has two very close wins with their last second tip-in at State and their last seconds three point shot at Clemson. Sure, Miami's conference record in unblemished; however, if one criticizes State's last second wins and says "woe is them", one has to do similarly for Duke and Miami.

Finally, note that Virginia Tech took UNC to overtime at Chapel Hill before losing.
