Amile Jefferson, a name that will live in NC State infamy for the next 3 years he is at duke, maybe 4 more years. (You never know when that redshirt is coming.) It was excruciating last year to wait all the way the last minute, to have Pack Pride travel to the announcement expecting an unprecedented fourth McDonald All-American for the NC State class. Then to have our hearts ripped out at the last second hearing a Duke commitment.
I remind you of those heart-wrenching events because this year is shaping up almost the same with a few differences. NC State doesn't have 3 McDonald All Americans this year, they have one, and Julius Randle is a much better prospect than Amile was. NC State doesn't have to fight Duke for his services but Kansas, Kentucky, Florida, and Texas. Kentucky, Kansas, and Florida all have strong cases for Randle but if I had my guess the race will come down to Kansas and NC State. Which leads us to the scenario of last year. Will state fans be left heartbroken again this year or will Randle join his friend Purvis and run with the pack? At this point it's anybody's guess, no one seems to have a hint of where Randle is headed right now which is a good thing. UK, KU, and Florida are all easy choices for experts to assume, the fact that they don't know may mean its not one of those schools. Randle did say in his blog that he wants to go somewhere fun. I like NC State's chances but I won't get too excited this year until I see a LOI signed.
As for other 2013 prospects NC State is recruiting 6'10 Center Sidy Djitte who more likely a 4-year project type Vandenberg player than a serious back up plan in case State doesn't land Randle. State is trying to land both to get a chance to develop Djitte who has tons of potential unlike Vandenberg. During his short time playing he has shown that he can rebound and score at a decent rate. No news of where he would go, but he is playing in Fayetteville and he has teams like Cincinnati, UCONN, and Clemson recruiting him.
Desmond Lee is a guy that NC State is persuing also. This JUCO guard looks to add a little more depth for NC State. Gottfried must realize the need for a bench at this level of basketball, allowing your team to play more aggressive on defense without worrying too much about foul trouble. Desmond is a guy that can fill up the basket quickly and could contribute in year 1. Torian Graham is still on the radar too but not much is known about what he will do. Either way if one guy commits then there won't be room for the other.
So that's it for now, once the recruiting period starts for 2014 I'll have an update.
