Playing Around with ESPN's BPI

After listening to ESPN analyst state that the ESPN BPI (basketball power index) is a better indicator of the success or lack thereof of NCAA basketball teams, I though I might take a look at it.

Currently State has a BPI of 82.1 ranking them as 17th. Miami is 85.3 and 12, UNC is 76.6 and 41, and Duke is 91.4 and 1. One can also look at the strength of schedule. Clicking on the "SOS" at the top of the columns, one sees that State's SOS is 67 ranking them 3rd. Duke is 62.8 and 25, UNC is 61 and 49 and Miami is 61.7 and 41.

With regard to State, Warren Nolan has the team with an RPI of 19 and a SOS of 5.

Just to compare this years State team with last years, one can see that last year State had a BPI of 73.1 and a ranking of 40 with a SOS of 65.5 and a ranking of 12.

State is better with regard to BPI and SOS this year than last, and we knew that was most likely true without looking at the figures, but it was fun to do so.
