First, look at this:
|Oeff (rank)||108.2 (70)||111 (32)||116.1 (9)|
|Deff (rank)||100.9 (140)||95.4 (65)||97.5 (112)|
|vs RPI 1-50||1-11||2-9||3-7|
Now think to yourself, "how should this season as a whole be viewed?"
One thing that always bothers me come tournament time is that the perception of a 30+ game season often comes down to a single game in the NCAA tournament.
I would argue that, taken as a whole, this season was a small step forward. The team was comfortably in the tournament all year with a better record and better wins than last year (both of the top 50 rpi wins from last year happened in the ncaa tournament). This was never going to be a top 10 basketball team, they were too thin and had real defensive limitations (lack of perimeter quickness, lack of interior height/size).
We still don't know who is coming back/leaving, but we can be pretty sure that this team will once again be thin in the frontcourt, but I believe the backcourt is going to be dynamite. One thing that I think we all need to see moving forward is a bigger commitment to defense by the players and coaching staff. The defense has been better than the Lowe years, but still has a ways to go before this can be an elite program.
The one thing I really want people to take notice of is the huge leap the program took in Gott's first year. Just remember what a pit of despair we were in. This staff has done a remarkable job and I am not worried at all about the state of the program.
