Wolfpack Perception in CFB Video Games or How Outsiders May View State

Hey! You guys remember 2007? Specifically the Fall. Wolfpack nation hoped to be led to former glory by a stoic yet successful marine and a former PG who talked a mighty fine talk...ahhh the innocence and ignorance of 2007, don't you just miss it?

Well 2007 was notable for another reason. It was the last release of a good college basketball video game, 2K Sports Coolege Hoops 2K8 (EA Sports would go on to release a couple more CBB games after that we'll just pretend don't exist). That was the last time NC State was featured in a video game outside of College Football. Considering our deficit of successful NBA/MLB players and the few Pro Bowlers we had in the NFL over that time, NCAA College Football was the only recourse a State fan had while playing a video game. And for the most part, from 2007-2013, State was very average in those games.

Obviously games that rate players use projections from what the player accomplished previously and how much they should develop to determine how good they'll be. This not only impacts a team’s final ranking, but interestingly enough affects the initial perception of a school/team among the hundreds of thousands of gamers who play.

SO, in anticipation of the drastic changes NC State will see in the upcoming NCAA Football 2014, let’s look at how we were perceived since 2007-2008.

Some of the ratings may seem a little confusing, but keep in mind they are counting special teams too. Also some years only listed the ratings as numbers so I just converted them using the same 10-point scale used in the other years.

As you can see, we were projected to be perfectly mediocre in most years and our teams played as such. If you look at each year you can see why the projects were what they were. In the 08-09 game we had come off a losing season & Russell was a RS Freshman who no one would knew would become The One…in the 2011-2012 game they placed Russell as a starter on the team and had him highly rated as one of our 3 "impact players" (sorry Badgers)…last season our secondary was rated very strong as was Glennon who wasn't even an "impact player." Obviously these games are a perfect representation of both expectations of a team and a reflection on their results in the next season.

So where does that leave us now? We don’t know yet! The next game is released next month and for the first time in 6 years we have a new coach, and for the first time since the game existed we have a new offensive system. I’ll be sure to cover that (and why they are how they are) when they are released.

Some individual ratings to pontificate over (from the 2012-2013 game):

Matt Canada- B-

Dave "Mr" Huxtable- C-

Manny Stocker- C-

Jacoby Brissett-C
