Georgia Southern

Hey guys, I figured since we're each others season openers, I'd take the time to stop by here! I'm gonna go out on a limb and say there's a good chance that some of y'all don't know a lot about us, so I'll just give a little background. Our football program was resurrected in the early 80's (went dormant after WW2) by a man named Erk Russell. He was the DC for UGA from 1964 to 1981. When then HC Vince Dooley got an offer from Auburn, most believed Erk was going to take over the helm at UGA, but when Dooley decided to stay, Erk Russell then went to Georgia Southern, a school that in the football world was never heard of. Play began in 1982, where we fielded a club team until 1984. In only our second season, 1985, we won our first FCS National Championship; we would then go on to win our 2nd National Championship the following season. In 1989, we finished 15-0 winning our third title, but it would also be our last with Erk as our head coach. Our 4th title came in 1990, the 5th came in 1999, and the 6th and final came in 2000. In our 32 seasons, we have a record of 282-105, and a winning/losing season ratio of 29-3.

This past season we finished 7-4. The biggest issue to last season if you ask around was that we had 19 of 63 scholarship players out with season ending injuries. Our biggest win, being one that I'm sure most of you have heard of, was the win against Florida. The previous 3 seasons we made the FCS Semi's, but we were not eligible for the playoffs this year given that it was our final season in the FCS. We ran the flexbone triple option under Jeff Monken who is now HC at Army. With Willie Fritz leading the team now, we will STILL run the triple option, but from the pistol. Our base formation will be a QB 3 yards back from the center, a RB to his left or right, another behind him, with two WRs split out and a TE added to the mix, very similar to what Auburn runs. Also, under Monken we passed about 5-10 times per game, under Fritz it will be closer to 15-20. Also, as it stands now, we have the #1 recruiting class in our new conference.

As far as our fan base goes, when you've only had 3 losing seasons in your programs history, wins are not hoped for, they are expected. However, we do realize that moving to the FBS is no cake walk, so realistic expectations should be between 5 and 7 wins. We will play NC State, Georgia Tech, Navy, FCS Savannah State, and our Sun Belt opponents. It is WAY too early to make any predictions for any game or even the season as a whole, but we luckily missed out on playing the top two teams in our conference and 3 of our opponents next year have a combined record of 3-33, Idaho, Georgia State and New Mexico State (Idaho and NMSU were not in The Sun Belt last season). So with that schedule, I'd say at worst we get 4 wins, and at best we get 7. But I thought I'd just stop by and let you all know a little bit about us! I'd be lying if I said I knew a lot about you guys as well, so please any information that I should know about y'all's team would be awesome!
