WBB: Squeaking by the Team in Last Place. Yikes!

When I finally got to view the stats for the game against Virginia Tech, there was about 11 minutes left, State was down by 10, 46-36, Gatling was on the bench with four fouls and had played only 18 minutes, Brown was something like 1 for 8 and Goodwin-Coleman was 0 for 7 (0-5 from the arc). I got ready to write about how the team had reached its ceiling, and that if a 20-3 team wants a truly great season, losing to the team in last place just cannot happen.

Somehow, State came back in overtime to beat VaTech 72-71 on a basket by Brown with four seconds left in overtime. Of course State fans had to sweat out a regular time last second shot by VaTech with the score tied at 60, and an overtime VaTech last second heave from about 35 feet. In overtime VaTech had taken the lead 71-70 on a three pointer by Hannah Young (1-5 from the arc) with 27 seconds left. State called timeout after the Tech three, wasted all but 9 seconds of the 27 seconds remaining in overtime, called another timeout, and then took the lead when Brown hit a runner for the win. By the way, Coach Moore in the post game said he hates runners, Brown's shot was not really a runner, but Brown's runner was acceptable. Right coach!

State is 21-3 overall and 8-2 in conference. WarrenNolan has their up to date RPI at 12. When was the last time a State basketball team was 21-3?

State has a chance to catch Duke if Duke loses to UNC tomorrow night at Duke. It's hard to pull for either Duke or UNC, but I think I will in this case pull for UNC.

TOP STATS

Markeisha Gatling scored 21 points on 10-13 from the floor in 26 minutes. Gatling was unstoppable when she re-entered the game with about 3 minutes left in regulation bringing State to 58-56, tying the game at 58-58 and then again tying the game at 60-60. Gatling picked up her fourth foul with about 17 minutes left in the game.

KODY BURKE! Kody returned to form scoring 22 points on 7-13 from the field, but again played monumental minutes at 41.

MIAH SPENCER! Without Miah Pack loses. Miah scored 11 points on 4-6 from the field. With Brown and Goodwin-Coleman off, who you going to call? Miah!

Uju Ugoka of VaTech scored 20 points on 7-13 from the field. Going into the game she was second in scoring in the conference.
