Softball: Em's Back, Chelsea is Hot, and Renada, is Well, Renada

Kevin C. Cox

State softball won 4-0 over UAB in the first game of the Athens Regional. Em Weiman strikes out eight and most likely still leads the nation in complete game shutouts.

State stranded 5 runners in the first two innings, but with the bases again loaded in the third, Chelsea Tate hit a shot off of third base leading to State's first run. State added two more with a bases loaded walk and a hit batter (Grant).

Tate also make an outstanding play at second by diving to her right to catch a hard hit ground ball, squaring herself and throwing the runner out who immediately did a belly flop after the play.

Early on State drove pitch after pitch out of the park, but foul. When Molly Hutchison finally hit one straight, what looked like a sure homer, got caught up in the wind such that the ball was caught 60 feet short of the fence. Even the analyst thought it was a homer when it was hit.

Not to be deterred by the wind, Renada Davis homered in the sixth. According to the analyst (haven't looked at the stats to verify but no reason to doubt-she has been on fire) over the last ten games prior to today, Renada is hitting near 500 with five home runs. Renada was 2 for 4 today.

State plays again at 12 p.m. tomorrow taking on most likely Georgia. It will be two outstanding pitchers going at it if that is so.
