Digging Deeper Into Pomeroy & the ACC

If there is anything we should have learned from Steven by now, it is that RPI is meaningless in actually evaluating basketball teams, and the Pomeroy ratings are the true measure of man. Is it true the ACC is really down this year? As we wind down the non-conference portion of the schedule, here's where we stand:

  1. North Carolina (5)
  2. Duke (8)
  3. Virginia (29)
  4. Virginia Tech (35)
  5. Florida State (39)
  6. Miami (57)
  7. NC State (62)
  8. Clemson (97)
  9. Georgia Tech (103)
  10. Maryland (160)
  11. Wake Forest (164)
  12. Boston College (255)

Bubblicious

I find that during the men's basketball season, women's basketball season and baseball season for N.C. State, i somewhat become an RPI/SOS wonk. I am taking my stats from Nolan's.

For the men's basketball team the RPI is 62 while the SOS is 21. That SOS is NCAA tournament worthy with the RPI being "on the bubble" type of stuff. State is 0-2 against teams 0-50 RPI wise and 2-2 against teams 51-100 RPI wise. State beat St. Bonnie and Texas currently 96 and 84 and lost to number 54 Indiana and number 84 Stanford. The other two losses were to number 1 Syracuse and number 39 Vanderbilt. State has no what can be considered bad losses going 3-0 for RPI's of 101+.

For the women: The State women currently have a RPI of 36 and a SOS of 24. This is solid NCAA tournament stuff. The women are 2-3 against teams with an RPI of 50 or less. The state women have no losses to teams with an RPI of 51+. The losses are too number (RPI) 18 Northwestern, number 29 Richmond and number 48 Creighton. The wins are over number 38 South Carolina and number 46 Vanderbilt. What hurts a tad is that the loss to Richmond was a home loss. The best win on the road was over number 128 TCU. The women have moved to a 16 game conference sechedule as opposed to the 14 game schedule used since the conference went to 12 teams. With this in mind, going 9-7 in conference with a wins over one or two of Duke, Maryland, UNC or Miami will ensure an NCAA bid.

For the men's team, its "needs more work", and for the women's team "its keep it up".

State Women Beat South Carolina in an Important Early Season Game

I decided to go to the women’s game against South Carolina today instead of watching the men play because I had a feeling the game against Stanford would end up like it did. On a side note, I did get back home in time to watch the collapse. The State women beat South Carolina 55-53 for an early season crucial win. If State was going to improve on last years dismal record, State needed to beat South Carolina today especially after losing to Creighton and Northwestern.

After Holston scored only 12 points against Creighton, I wrote that State needed more from her in order to be successful. Following the Creighton game, Holston scored only 10 points against Northwestern. For some players, 12 points and 10 points would be fine, but Holston is State’s star player and, as I wrote, needs to do more. Today she scored 20 on 9 for 18 shooting. Holston tied the game at 53 with 47 seconds left with a short jumper and won the game by hitting another short jumper with 6 seconds left. Anyone who watches Holston play knows that when she is on her game, she is All-ACC. While only five-eleven, her jump shot is difficult to block as she shoots it from almost behind her head, and when she gets on a run, she doesn’t miss.

Holston had help from Kastanek who scored 12 points. While Kastanek did not shoot that well from the floor going 4-13, no one plays harder that her, nor does anyone else have her all around game. Emili Tasler in her redshirt senior year has moved into the starting lineup even while wearing a big knee brace. She made two important shots. The first was a three pointer giving State a three point lead with 8 minutes and 12 seconds left and the second more important one was a two pointer pulling State within 2 with 1 minute and 34 seconds left. Early in the second half State was up by 10, but South Carolina, who was quicker than State, used a full court press, which led to State turnovers, and dribble drives to take the lead at 53-49 with 1 minute and 49 seconds left.

Creighton and Northwestern killed State with three points shots, and I could see why as State’s three point defense was non-existent in the first half. However, South Carolina went 0-10 in the first half and 1-15 for the game. I wonder if State chose to pack the lane daring South Carolina to shoot from the three point line, and will this be something one will see more often? As one might know, the three point line was moved back for the women this year such that it is now the same distance as for the men. Will this change the dynamics of the women’s game? Despite State’s poor shooting for the game (35%), State played their usual up-tempo game. As I have written before, Kellie Harper can coach, but can she recruit. One thing which would help her is for the men’s team to become relevant again.

Bridge Over the River Awesome

Bridge_medium

"DON'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO!" (Jim Bridge reacts with the deafening intensity of a jet engine to someone telling him to have a nice day.)

Jim Bridge is so awesomely loud he once got kicked out of a KISS concert for whispering, and he doesn't take shit off of anyone. In the interest of safety, the sheer ear drum melting fury possessed by Bridge is best witnessed visually. If you have any pics of him unfurling sonic ass kickings upon unsuspecting mortals, feel free to post them here.

So T.J. Yates may be starting for the Texans

Some game action of ol' T.J. from yesterday:

Well, I always remembered Yates as cowering and assuming the fetal position while taking a sack against State, but... wait a minute... that picture looks familiar...
