And Then There Were Seven

Oregon State sent Louisville home today with an 11-4 win, leaving three teams left in the bracket opposite ours. Mississippi State and Indiana face off in the winners' bracket tonight, though Oregon State might be the most dangerous team of the three.

Rice's Rotation Announced

Kubitza vs. Rodon? Expect strikeouts. Lots of strikeouts. Stats on Rice's guys here.

Carlos Rodon Probably Will Start Friday

At least that's the way Avent was leaning yesterday...

"Coach Holladay and I talked about it a lot, and the rest of the staff all morning. We try to keep routine, which is big for us. We try to stay with routine a lot. Carlos' [Rodon] pitch count was way down last week against William & Mary, so we are probably going to go with Carlos on Friday. We haven't made that decision, but it is probably Carlos Rodon on Friday."

Baseball America On Carlos Rodon

Jim Shonerd of Baseball America wrote a good piece on Carlos Rodon, his start Saturday, and the way he's been playing lately.

Rodon had everything working from the outset Saturday, from his overpowering fastball to his cutter and backfoot slider that make him deadly even against predominantly righthanded lineups. He hit 92-93 mph regularly throughout the night and retired the first 12 Tribe batters, carrying a no-hitter into the sixth before giving up a two-out single to William Shaw. He responded to that affront by striking out five of the next six.

Took a no-hitter deep into the game for the second straight start. He has allowed a total of three hits over his last 23 innings pitched, which is insane.

Previewing Binghamton

It's not, as it turns out, a cricket club in the jolly old UK.

Ole Miss Ace To Pitch Saturday

Ole Miss is going the same route as NC State, holding its best starter until game two:

Mike Mayers (5-5, 2.98 ERA) will start against No. 3 seed William & Mary on Friday, coach Mike Bianco said today.

That allows Bobby Wahl (9-0, 1.99) to start Saturday's game, potentially against No. 1 seed North Carolina State.

A Wahl vs. Carlos Rodon (N.C. State's ace) would be one of the better pitching matchups of the regional round.

Wahl's numbers don't really jump out at you--his K rate is solid but nothing scary, and he's walking more than four batters per nine innings. But check out that incredibly low opponents' batting average on balls in play (BABIP). He's been lucky this year. (This is one reason why fielding independent ERA [FIP] is more useful than ERA.)

Rodon To Start On Saturday

Carlos Rodon will not pitch the opener against Binghamton and will instead go Saturday, which comes as no surprise.

The Saturday winners' bracket game is not only the most important game of the regional, it also guarantees a tougher opponent. Plus this keeps Rodon on his regular schedule.
