NC State officially announced the addition of George Barlow to the football staff on Thursday. Barlow had been the defensive backs coach under James Franklin at Vanderbilt and will assume the same role with the Wolfpack, replacing Richard McNutt, who was relieved last weekend. The addition of Barlow had been rumored for several days.
He brings considerably more coaching experience to the table than McNutt, having started his career back in the early 90s. He even had a brief stint as a head coach at New Mexico after Mike Locksley was fired in 2011.
I couldn't tell you the first thing about his ability to recruit, but it is encouraging that Vanderbilt was so surprisingly successful on that front while he was there. The Commodores finished with the 26th-best class in the country last year and were on track for another good haul before Franklin left for Penn State, effectively blowing up the whole thing. (You wanna talk about worst-case recruiting scenarios--yowza.)
