Doctors have cleared him to join the team for spring practice, which starts today. But even eight months after the crash, he plans to take his return to the field cautiously, seeing how much his body will allow him to do.

Irving's plan ("Lord willing," he said) is to be at full strength by the beginning of the season. He still faces many unknowns on the football field, though.

He's not as strong or fast as he was before the crash, but he hopes to exceed his previous physical benchmarks by the time the season starts.

The N.C. State women's basketball team advances to the finals of the ACC Tournament for the first time since 2007, defeating Boston College 63-57 in the semifinals of the ACC Women's Basketball Tournament at the Greensboro Coliseum on Saturday.

An undersized Wolfpack squad used a 15-0 second half run to rally, depending on its rugged defense and the clutch shooting of senior guard Nikitta Gartrell, who scored a game-high 25 points and several key shots down the stretch.

State will face top-seeded Duke in the tournament final on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Coming into 2010, though, Irving is lucky to be suiting up at all after suffering a badly broken leg, separated shoulder and collapsed lung in a horrific car accident last June, knocking him out for all of 2009 and putting his football future in doubt. In fact, it may still be in some doubt -- the pain only subsided enough to allow him to begin running again last month, and he was just cleared for spring practice earlier this week.

N.C. State's leading scorer Tracy Smith banged up his right knee late in the second half of Saturday's win at Miami. He was helped to the bench to receive treatment but he did come back in the ball game before it ended. Smith did have some soreness in the knee on Sunday. He didn't practice today, but did take part in some light drills.

Sore but otherwise okay.

UCI closer Kyle Necke came on to pitch the bottom of the 10th, but it was not his day. After retiring Kyle Wilson on an infield pop-up to start the inning, Necke walked Ciencin and gave up a single up the middle to Maynard to put runners on first and second for Canela, who atoned for his defensive malfeasances with his second double past the first-base bag and into the right-field corner. Ciencin and Maynard scored to tie the game at 4-4.

Necke played the percentages by walking Drew Poulk to pitch to Russell Wilson, but the Wolfpack left fielder got a 1-2 pitch to his liking and crushed it, high and deep over the wall in left-center for the Pack’s second extra-inning walkoff victory this week.

"I just have to get my conditioning better and get stronger," Smith said. "My 15-foot jump shot, I plan on shooting that more."

Smith said he is already excited about the arrival next season of freshmen Ryan Harrow and Lorenzo Brown after sharing the court with them during pickup games last off-season.

"I can’t wait," Smith said. "I played with them over the summer. We played pickup basketball in the gym and shot around. Ryan Harrow’s a good kid. Him and Lorenzo, I’m definitely looking forward to playing with them next year."
