I went back to the tailgate and had a celebration beer after the football game, so if you caught the basketball scrimmage, please feel free to share your thoughts here.
There's a recap from GoPack.com up, as well as some video. Sounds like Alex Johnson played pretty well, and I like that rebound total from Calvin Leslie.
In period one, sophomore Lorenzo Brown and graduate student Alex Johnson led all scorers 10 points each. However it was Johnson's White squad prevailing 26-22. In the second stanza, the trio of junior Richard Howell, freshman Thomas de Thaey and Johnson each chipped in eight points as the White won again by the score of 30-25. Sophmore C.J. Leslie and junior Scott Wood were the high-point men for the Red team with five points apiece. To close out the scrimmage, the White team edged the Red, 30-29, with Leslie's period 14 points and Williams adding 10. The Red team was led by Brown, De Thaey and freshman Tyler Harris with eight points each.
Johnson recorded a team-high 23 points over the three periods while Brown tallied 21 points and Leslie added 19. Leslie also grabbed a scrimmage best 12 boards
I'm hopeful that Leslie and Howell can improve the team's defensive rebounding. That's a big key to a surprise season. I'm also interested to see how well we take care of the ball on offense; last year's team did an excellent job in that area, and Ryan Harrow was a big part of that.
The N&O has a recap and photo gallery from the game.
