Tonight the Pack hosts one half of the dynamic Kenan-Flagler comedy duo, or so I thought until I looked at wikipedia. As it turns out, Flagler is a 4-year institution in St. Augustine, Florida that was named after oil tycoon Henry Flagler. My guess is he drank a lot of people's milkshakes back in the day.
Whenever I see the phrase "oil tycoon," I think of Monty Burns sitting in one of his cavernous rooms, holding a snifter of brandy. I assume that's pretty much what being a tycoon is all about. God I wish I had a billion dollars.
Few details are truly necessary in the lead-up to this game, but I'll toss a few out anyway. The Flagler Saints are a division II outfit that plays in the Peach Belt Conference; they were 10-16 overall and 4-14 in league play last season. They lost four of five starters from that team, including the leading scorer, leading rebounder, and best point guard.
They also had a couple of guys leave to "focus on academics," according to their preseason prospectus.
With so much gone, the go-to role probably belongs to forward Chad July by default, as he's the only returning starter and most experienced guy on the team. He hit a hair over half of his twos last year and turned the ball over a little more than you'd like. Pretty good rebounder at both ends but not much of a shot-blocking threat, perhaps because of the 260 pounds he's carrying around.
The game tips at 7:00 p.m. Monday night at the RBC Center, and you can get in free if you bring three canned goods.
