Baseball Sweeps BC, Secures 7-Seed

NC State finished off a three-game sweep of Boston College with an easy 6-1 win this afternoon.

Rob Chamra took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and Matt Bergquist drove in three runs Saturday to lead NC State past Boston College 6-1 in the final game of a three-game series at Shea Field.

NC State, which swept the series, finishes the regular season 33-23 overall and an even 15-15 in the ACC. The Wolfpack went 23-13 overall and 14-10 in the conference after beginning the year 10-10 and 1-5. Boston College finishes the season 17-33 overall and 7-22 in the ACC.

Every one of those wins proved pivotal because Wake Forest also got to 15-15 over the weekend. State wins the tiebreaker and takes the 7-seed, which is important because it means the Pack avoids Virginia in ACC tournament group play. Those groups will look like this:

Group A: (1) Virginia, (4) UNC, (5) Miami, (8) Wake Forest
Group B: (2) FSU, (3) Georgia Tech, (6) Clemson, (7) NC State

The teams go round-robin within their groups, and then the two group winners play for the ACC championship. The league should release the schedule tomorrow. The other three teams in State's group rank in the RPI top 10, so there are plenty of opportunities for the Wolfpack to add quality wins to the resume, though I don't think NC State has to worry about making the NCAAs at this point.
