NC State Drops Regional Opener To Stetson, 8-7

It looked good early, then it looked worse but still tenable, then it looked worse still, and then it looked better, and then we lost. I should be a beat writer.

Stetson rallied from a 5-0 deficit to lead 7-5 before NC State tied the game on a Danny Canela home run in the 7th inning. State's pitchers worked out of a couple of jams in the 7th and 8th and the team finally appeared to be in a position to extend the game well into extras when Chris Overman entered for the 9th. Ben Carhart hit a one-out single, advanced to second on a wild pitch, then scored  the game-winner on a single and error by the left fielder. There would have been a play at the plate had Cameron Conner fielded the hit cleanly; how close it would have been, I have no idea.

While all of State's relief pitchers struggled to some degree, Stetson found a game-saver in Jake Boyd, who struck out six over the final three innings. State never put a runner in scoring position against Boyd, while the Hatters threatened throughout the final third of the game.

Damn you, sports!
