The Duke/Carolina game on Saturday will determine the order of the top two seeds, while Florida State is locked into the three-seed. Maryland is locked into the No. 8 seed. Beyond that, things get a bit hairy; Virginia, NC State, Miami, and Clemson are tied at 8-7 and each team could finish anywhere between fourth and seventh. Here are the scenarios that would result in State finishing fourth or fifth:
* The Wolfpack will be the No. 4 seed with a win AND a Virginia loss AND a Clemson loss
* The Wolfpack will be the No. 4 seed with a win AND a Virginia loss AND a Clemson win AND a Miami win
* The Wolfpack will be the No. 5 seed with a Virginia win AND a Clemson loss AND a Miami loss
* The Wolfpack will be the No. 5 seed with a win AND a Virginia win AND a Clemson loss AND a Miami win
* The Wolfpack will be the No. 5 seed with a win AND a Virginia loss AND a Clemson win AND a Miami loss
If we lose to Virginia Tech, we can't finish any higher than sixth, and the only way we avoid the seven-seed is if Miami also loses. Miami closes out the regular season at home with Boston College, so it's fair to assume that a loss to VT means a seven-seed for State.
Saturday afternoon update: Miami cruised by Boston College as expected, and Georgia Tech beat Wake Forest. Georgia Tech will be the No. 11 seed and BC will be No. 12. That makes four tournament seeds now set in stone.
