With all that's been going on with the basketball team, the baseball team's efforts over the weekend got buried in the news. NC State swept a ranked Wake Forest team to improve to 5-1 in the ACC and 15-3 overall, with two series wins over ranked ACC teams. This a huge week for the team, as they'll play ECU before a three-game series against UNC this weekend, and then another mid-week game against ECU following that. The UNC series will be televised by ESPNU, by the way.
State's freshman class has had a big role in the fast start. Carlos Rodon has been as good as advertised in stepping into a weekend role, while Trea Turner and Brett Austin haven't been bothered to much by having to face college pitching.
Rodon: 4-0, 1.29 ERA, 35 IP, 40 K, 10 BB
Turner: .304/.442/.420, 19-19 in stolen base attempts
Austin: .353/.422/.426
Chris Diaz, Ryan Mathews, and Andrew Ciencin have also been outstanding so far. Logan Jernigan and Anthony Tzamtzis give State's rotation some serious power, though they can be erratic.
All in all, it's a team that's developing nicely.
