#BTPHOF Nominees - Jan/Feb 2019 Update aka Buckle up Buttercup

Note up front: This is one of the longest posts in BTP history. Get some coffee, I’m not kidding.

When I kicked this off in early January, I wasn’t sure what to expect from y’all. The premise was simple, to note those comments made on BTP that went above and beyond, and ought to be memorialized in some way.

The instructions were simple:

“Step 1: If you read a comment on any future post and really feel it worthy of being saved, reply to the comment with the hashtag: #BTPHOF.”

There was no Step 2.

Now, figuring out how to summarize all these has been the challenge. The initial thought of putting them in the comment section proved to be too cumbersome. I settled on taking screenshots. Even this has been quite the undertaking for a lowly clown blogger...And then I almost broke the editor since I hit the limit on putting pictures in, apparently, along with the length slowing the system down.

Since starting this, in just under two months there have been 86 comments labeled with the BTPHOF tag. Reading these out of context will be humorously disorienting. Some will stand the test of time, while others will be dated immediately.

I realized pretty quickly that the actual articles these were coming from was inconsequential to the comments themselves. Which makes them even that much more enjoyable, IMO.

NOTE: There’s a link at the bottom of each screenshot to jump directly to each comment to attempt to retain the context. I tried to mark the comment in the chain that got the #BTPHOF vote by using this: {This one —>}

NOTE 2: None of these are no23sports gif’s. That needs its own separate post to run down the best ones there, too many to pick. He’s got a great sequence that starts here.

NOTE 3: The timestamps are out of order just because the search engine returned them in that order, no other reason.

NOTE 4: This is pretty much every comment tagged with BTPHOF. These are all contenders, just here for summary, not the final inductees. Also, I may have missed some in the process, it’s possible, I am a human. The site hasn’t shifted to the insect overlords just yet.

NOTE 5: A huge THANK YOU to everyone for latching on to this hashtag and helping make it a success. Keep it up.

#28: A lot of things in life would have been different if I could dunk.

Instead, I would’ve tried a layup that hit the underside of the rim hard and rebounded straight down on my head which would’ve caused me to lose my balance and crash into a cheerleader. The cheerleader, in an instinctive reaction, would’ve brought her knee up straight into my nuts. This would’ve caused my hands to go to my nuts instead of protecting my fall and my face would’ve smashed on the court breaking my nose and knocking several teeth out. I’m glad I wasn’t playing.

ThunderWalker totals: 15 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and only one turnover. And Walker was robbed of an and 1.

Would like to see a few more rebounds, but given our guard-heavy offense, the point production ain’t bad (it came on 6/11 shooting from the floor and 3/5 from the line).

Funderburk COULD have had at least three more assists, as he was finding open shooters from the zone quite well, but we bricked some open looks.We have two pretty damn smart bigs. Just wish there was a bit more depth there and that Walker could jump over a cigarette.

#47: Kids these days do not realize how hard it was to stream video in the early 2000’s.

Obviously it wasn’t this decade but

Anthony Grundy had one vs UNCG, a year where they were not necessarily a good mid major team. And I remember that being 1) kinda embarrassing but 2) so much fun because I think it was the first buzzer beater I’d ever seen live in person.

I like the CJL a lot because I remember watching it on some shitty grainy feed (as evidenced by the video of it). It was like being sent back in time watching that game it was such poor quality.

Has no one heard of UMBC Retrievers??? They were a very small school, not even big enough to be a “mid” major. Their average size player was 5’8”, 135 lbs. Their coach is only part time because he manages a Dairy Queen. They only have 5 jerseys so when subs come in, they must wait until the starter swaps off his jersey before going to scorer’s table. They have no team bus and share UberX rides. They look for $20/night AirBnB for road games, and draw straws for who sleeps on the floor. For home games, they ask the visiting team to bring a basketball as all they have is a worn rubber women’s size ball.

Yet THEY beat UVA less than a year ago! So what do you think the PACK will do to UVA?

Or angry after a loss like this, I remind myself we are still rebuilding.

We opportunistically got Beverly and Funderburk from OSU, after a coaching change there.

Ian Steere decided to transfer after playing for us for four minutes, which probably hurt what Keats was planning in the off season regarding our rotation and made us thin upfront.

Manny Bates had season ending soldier surgery. He was in the ESPN Top 100. I don’t think we have many top 100 players on this team.

We returned 3 players from last year’s team. Lost 2 freshman bigs for the season.

We don’t have a lot of guys, who were thought of as ACC talent coming out of high school, or generally P5 talent, but we are still competing every game against more talented teams.

All in all, I think we are heading in a good direction, well ahead of expectations, when Keatts was hired. So that helps temper my mood swings after losses.

I really hope Swimming can pull off a NCAA title this year (I think they’re the closest to winning a title). She deserves a team title during her tenure.

I’ve known this was coming for a long time, but it still really sucks. I hope Boo knows enough to keep the successful coaches happy, and the fortitude to let the less successful ones go. Debbie was a master at both.

already in his tenure that they aren’t a fan of Keatts and think he can’t recruit. Obviously these people are insane but I do hope we focus on getting a bit more size to help defending down low.

Duke is better than us be we played pretty well and hung in there. Just take care of business the rest of the way.
