They were overdue to win a close one. Despite Duke having a 21 - 6 advantage in shots, both teams were evenly matched at 4 shots on goal. I looked over the shot chart and Duke's shots were all from within the final third and many were at the edge of the box or closer. Either the defensive pressure was really good or it was a bad shooting night for Duke. The winning goal came in the second overtime. State turned a defensive takeaway deep on their own side of the field into a breakaway for an unassisted goal. It was a single pass to the midfield line and then a footrace to the goal. Joseph was too fast for the 3 Duke defenders and used a nice change in direction to get the open shot into the bottom far corner of the goal. The team's twitter feed has both of the goals on video. Wohner scored the first goal off a nice centering pass from Kawagishi. She one timed it into the goal from about 15'. Joseph and Wohner are first and second on the team in goals scored. Maybe this will be the confidence booster they need to turn more of these close games into wins. The other notable aspect of the game was only 2 substitutions on the NC State side. I think Santoro has found a lineup he likes and their fitness levels must be good enough with the cooler weather to go the distance.
