Softball: 2022 Roster Has Me Shaking My Head

I have been trying to support Head Coach Jennifer Patrick-Swift's softball teams, but it keeps getting harder. It is almost impossible to build a winning softball program when a team is constantly rebuilding especially the pitching staff. Ask Coach Rychick.

Players of significance with eligibility not shown on the 2022 Roster are first and foremost Sam Russ, infielder April Visser, pitcher Estelle Czech and pitcher Sydney Nester.

As a fan of State softball, I was looking forward to the team having a decent pitching staff with rising sophomore Estelle Czech (73.2 innings pitched; 3.14 era) and rising redshirt junior Sydney Nester (105 innings pitched; 3.87 era).

How about Sam Russ, who hit 308 this past season and stole 32 bases in 36 attempts? Sam would have been a redshirt senior in 2022. While April Visser did not hit well, she has been a starter at either short stop or second base for most of her career if not all at State. April would have been a redshirt junior.

Fans had to feel good about having Estelle Czech pitch for State considering how she stepped up after Abby Trahan was suspended and apparently left the team. Not going to happen.

At least Randi Farriker is still on the roster as a graduate student. Randi hit 311 last season with 17 home runs. Also, still on the roster is Logan Morris who hit 338 with 10 home runs.

One has to wonder who is going to provide the type of pitching needed to win enough games to make the NCAA tournament-maybe Sam Gress. Further one has to wonder who is going to hit those dingers for a team which digs the long ball beyond Farriker and Morris.
