NC State Overcomes Vanderbilt 84-78

Happy Thanksgiving!

NCAA Basketball: Vegas Showdown-N.C. State at Vanderbilt Stephen R. Sylvanie-USA TODAY Sports

Game Summary:

As we anticipated, three key Vandy players who had not played this season played tonight and two of them, Lawrence and Lupin, were their leading scorers. We did not anticipate that their starting PG and leading scorer would be injured and miss the game. They will be a handful when he comes back, which should benefit our resume later.

It was a tough game, not made any easier by foul trouble and slow offensive starts each half. But our trademark this season has been defense, and that was no different tonight forcing 19 turnovers and scoring 16 points off those turnovers.

This was our toughest test so far, and we controlled the game with a double-digit lead much of the time. On to the next one.

Four Factors

Team EFG% TO % OReb% FTA/FGA
Team EFG% TO % OReb% FTA/FGA
NCS 51.5 12.3 30.9 28.7
Vanderbilt 49.1 20.2 34.6 42.9

Overall Takeaways:

  • Not a good shooting night overall (42.9%), but the defense was solid the entire game and we got 14 more shots than the Commodores
  • The three point shot opened up, we took 19 and hit 42.1%. We’ll take that anytime.
  • The fouling seemed a bit weighted in their favor, but we made the most of our 21 opportunities at the line, shooting 76.2%
  • We had 17 assists on 30 made baskets
  • We again held our turnovers to an acceptable 12. Vandy hangs their hat on forcing turnovers
  • This was our first “big man” foul trouble of the season. We’re going to need Middlebrooks to be able to guard without fouling and become an offensive threat. In the early season interviews Keatts told us he’d be “shocked” if Ben didn’t lead us in rebounding, and “he’s going to surprise us with his shooting.” The jury is out.

Individual Highlights

  • Dennis Parker Jr came off the bench and had career highs in minutes played (33), points and rebounds
  • DJ Burns had his weakest shooting percentage of the season, but still missed a double-double by a rebound. And had 4 assists.
  • Jaden Taylor sparked the team with a huge second half both with his defense and shooting 50% from the floor. He scored 16 of our 41 points in the second half.
  • Michael O’Connell played 27 very solid minutes at PG with 4 assists, 4 rebounds, 9 points and 3 steals
