NC State Loses to BYU in Vegas Showdown Championship Game 95-86

Career night for Casey Morsell in a very disappointing loss

NCAA Basketball: Vegas Showdown-N.C. State at Vanderbilt Stephen R. Sylvanie-USA TODAY Sports

Game Summary:

This one will be talked about for a while. Three players (including the coach’s son) and the coach tossed out of the game. BYU did exactly what they have done all season, the keys to the game were:

  1. Guard the 3PT arc – They hit 14 and shot 41.2%.
  2. Rebound – They out rebounded us by 11, winning both offensive and defensive ends
  3. Defend the passing lanes – They got 20 assists on 34 made shots

We were the better team in the first half, but they got back to playing their game and dominated the second half shooting 70%, including 9-13 from 3PT.

Four Factors

Team Efg% TO % OReb% FTA/FGA
Team Efg% TO % OReb% FTA/FGA
NCS 52.2 12.2 28.3 29.8
BYU 58.6 16.1 40 26.1

Overall Takeaways:

It was a tough loss, but the Pack played well, especially in the first half.

  • BYU shot the 3PT well, but so did we. We hit 10 of 25 for 40%.
  • We got 11 steals
  • We only had 9 turnovers
  • We forced 17 turnovers, but only got 13 points

Keatts Comments

  • We did not respond well to the scouting report. We let BYU play to their strengths
  • We did not communicate well
  • The thing that stands out on the stat sheet is their 3PT shooting, that was the difference

Individual Highlights

  • DJ Burns led the team in assists
  • DJ Horne let the team in steals
