NC State Welcomes the Detroit Mercy Titans

Let’s finish 2023 with a win!

Long time season ticket holder S.Claus was in town for the Saint Louis game

When: Saturday December 23 - 1:00 PM

Where: PNC

Opponent: Detroit Mercy University Titans (Horizon League)

Preseason Conference Prediction: 9th (of 11) in the Horizon

Pomeroy Prediction: Wolfpack 83 - 61

Wolfpack Snapshot: KP #74, NET #63, #7 in ACC NET rankings

Wolfpack Season So Far:

The Pack will finish the OOC season this week without the hoped for resume building, non-conference win, but on the positive side, no bad losses.

  • Losses: Undefeated Ole Miss (NET #56), Tennessee (NET #7), and BYU (NET #3) are all Q1.
  • Looking ahead: Ole Miss & UT start the SEC season playing each other in Knoxville. We’ll start finding out if BYU is for real when they begin their first season in the B12 at Baylor.
  • Best Win: Boston College (NET #82) Q2.

Wolfpack Injury Report:

Mo Diarra has played only 8 minutes total in the last two games. So far there has been no indication that this is the Wolfpack’s annual ‘lose a key player for the season’ event. It’s more likely that Keatts is going to rest him until conference play begins in January.

Opponent Overview:

The Titans (NET #351, KP #340) begin life without Coach Mike Davis’ son, Antoine, the NCAA second all-time leading scorer, only three points behind Pete Maravich. (Qualifier: Pete did it in 3 seasons, 83 games. Antoine did it in 5 seasons, 144 games) They also lost 3 other starters from a team that finished 14-19 last season.

Their Season So Far:

As of this writing, there are 3 D1 teams remaining with no wins in the ’23-‘24 season, Georgia Southern, Mississippi Valley St, and – drum rolllllllllllllll – Detroit Mercy University. DMU is 0-12 on the season so far. Their two highest ranked opponents to date have been Cincinnati and Northwestern, they lost both games by 32. (each, 64 total!)

Our one common opponent of the season so far is Ole Miss. We both played them on the Ole Miss home court, both lost, Detroit Mercy lost 69-70. They were up 69-68 with 33 seconds left, Ole Miss hit two free throws, then the Detroit Mercy’s Tankersley missed a jumper with 1 second left.

Player Notes

  • Senior guard Jayden Stone leads the team in Ppg, FGM. 3PTM, 3PT%, Apg, Spg. He scored 34 points in a game earlier this season.
  • Sophomore guard Marcus Tankersley is the second leading scorer, he pulled 11 rebounds in a game earlier this season. He had a double-double (23/11) against Northwestern.
  • Together Stone & Tankersley have taken about 50% of the team’s shots on the season. Coincidentally, the remainder of the team has also taken about 50% of the team’s shots on the season.
  • Grad forward Edoardo Del Cadia leads the team in rebounding and had a double-double (16/10) against Ole Miss.
  • Ryan Hurst is a freshman guard who has only played in two games. He played very well in his only start Thursday against Central Michigan, leading the team in scoring (16) and rebounding (9).

Key Player Injuries

  • Jayden Stone injured his ankle in the Loyola Marymount game on 12/18 and missed yesterday’s game against Central Michigan. It appears freshman Ryan Hurst substituted for Stone in the starting lineup in that game.

Titan Probable Starters (with or without Stone)

If Stone does not play, best guess is Hurst will replace him in the starting lineup

Keys To The Game

  1. Make the game difficult for the star - #14 Guard Jayden Stone is the key to this team. He takes, and makes, more FG, 3PT, and FT than anyone on the team. He takes more than twice as many 3PT shots as anyone else on the team, shooting 34.5%.
  2. Don’t let the guard drive - #4 Marcus Tankersley is the second leading scorer, but only averages taking a little over 1 3PT shot per game. Expect the drive, make him work hard.
  3. Challenge the forward - #23 Forward Edoardo Del Cadia is a good rebounder but has a tendency to turn the ball over. He leads the team in turnovers by a wide margin, averaging 3.45 TOpg. He also averages 3.6 fouls per game. He fouled out twice and gotten 4 fouls in 4 other games.

For The Wolfpack to Win

The Pack is heavily favored and should win comfortably with or without Stone. The team just needs to mentally avoid taking the Christmas break early, avoid injuries, and play two solid halves of basketball. Then relax for a few days and come back ready for the grind.
