WBB: 18th Annual Play4Kay Game

H 4 H-3

(State hosts VaTech in the Play4Kay game; Monday; February 6th; 6 p.m.; ESPN2)

I always feel that this is the most significant Athletic Event held on the N. C. State Campus. This from a Bing search of the Play4Kay game:

Play4Kay at NC State is a yearly event which inspired a national movement. Former NC State head coach Kay Yow began the tradition in 2006, when one of the Wolfpack's home games was dedicated towards raising awareness and money for the fight against women's cancers. Donations made towards this cause go directly to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.

The first Play4Kay game called Hoops for Hope at the time was an 85-57 February 19, 2006 loss to Maryland. State's record in the Play4Kay, Hoops for Hope game stands at 8 and 9.

State's record against VaTech is 27 and 2. State's first loss to VaTech was in the 2015 ACC Tournament, a 57-56 loss. In that game Miah Spencer gave State a 56-55 lead on an "and one" basket. Hannah Young of Tech ended the game with a corner jumper with less than a second left.

Tech's second win was on January 28th, 2021 when Elissa Cunane did not play due to Covid Protocol. Camille Hobby had 19 in that game sending the game into overtime with an arc shot with no time left. VaTech outscored State 26-14 in overtime to win 83-71.

From Nolan:

VaTech has a 18-4 overall record; 8-4 in conference. VaTech also has a Live RPI of 24, a NET of 20, an ELO of 16, an SOS of 58, a quad 1 NET record of 3-4 and a quad 1 RPI record of 5-4. VaTech has two significant wins which are over Net 19 North Carolina and over NET 18 Tennessee.

From Nolan:

State has an overall record of 16-6 and a conference record of 6-5. State has a Live RPI of 12, a NET of 13, an ELO of 21 and an SOS of 4. State's quad 1 record is 6-5 and their quad 1 RPI record is also 6-5. State has two significant wins which are over NET 8 Iowa and NET 6 Notre Dame.

VaTech has as starters the best center in the conference in six-five senior 2022 POY Elizabeth Kitley and one can argue the best point guard in the conference in five-six junior Georgia Amoore. VaTech also starts Preseason All-ACC five-eleven graduate student and former B. C. star Taylor Soule, six-foot senior Cayla King and former Purdue star and former second team All-Big Ten five-nine senior Kayana Traylor. In VaTech's last game, six-two senior D'asia Gregg played 25 minutes off the bench.

Kitley as expected leads VaTech in scoring with 18 ppg followed by Moore at 13.9 ppg. Kitley also leads the team in rebounding at 11 rpg. Kitley shoots 557 from the floor. King leads the team in arc shooting at 329. VaTech shoots 448 from the floor; 343 from the arc.

For interest, State shoots 451 from the floor; 342 from the arc. Some other interesting stats for State are River Baldwin shooting 520 from the floor; Jada Boyd shooting 462 from the arc and Jakia Brown-Turner shooting 372 from the floor; 296 from the arc.

Nolan picks State to win 69-64 with a 67%-win probability. Lobo of Her Hoop Stats picks State to win 69.6 to 61.8 with a 75.1%-win probability.

Taking a look at Jada Boyd's last three games: Jada led the team in scoring against Louisville scoring 15 in 23 minutes and shooting 6-8 from the floor; 1-1 from the arc. Against Notre Dame she scored 6 shooting 3-5 from the floor while playing 24 minutes. Against Georgia Tech, Jada in 19 minutes scored 2 points shooting 1-5 from the floor. We need to see the Louisville Jada Monday night and I might add we need to see the Notre Dame Mimi Collins (13 points on 6-8 from the floor; 1-2 from the arc) Monday night.

Go Pack-even the Play4Kay record!
