NC State Conquers the UVA Cavaliers 76-60

Holding serve on our home court

DJ Horne hits a 3PT shot from the top of the key.

Game Summary:

NC State played one of our better games of the season, addressing several season long areas of concern, including rebounding and free throw shooting, as well as shaking off the poor shooting from Wednesday’s game at Notre Dame. That’s a much needed Q2 win.

The Pack started slowly again, but Virginia did as well. With 4:29 left in the first half, Casey Morsell hit a 3PT shot to give us a 23-21 lead, and from that point forward we continued to build the lead, eventually leading by as many as 21 in the second half before we cooled off a little and they closed to the final 16-point margin.

Virginia is a tough team to prepare for. Most of our players had no experience playing them, and the team only had two days of practice. But that didn’t appear to matter. Except for losing some defensive assignments on screens early, leading to some easy Cav baskets (corrected in the 2nd half) we handled the pack-line defense well. UVA had been allowing an average of 55 points per game, we topped that by 21.

Next up, the boys in baby blue.

Four Factors

Team eFG% TO % OReb% FTA/FGA

NC State 57.9% 9.6% 16.1% 21.1%
Virginia 48.1% 13.1% 15.6% 24.5%

Overall Takeaways:

  • The Pack shook off the shooting woes from Wednesday and shot better than UVA in all three categories, shooting a very respectable 49.1 FG% / 35.7 3PT% / 83.3 FT%.
  • We out rebounded our opponent for the second game in a row, 32-31. We had four players with 4 or more rebounds.
  • UVA leads the league in fewest turnovers, we led them 6-8. (both really good numbers - but ours is better)
