13 UNC football players suspended for selling team-issued shoes

On Monday, UNC announced the suspension of 13 football players for selling free team-issued Jordan-brand shoes. That includes quarterback Chazz Surratt and a couple of key defensive players. The suspensions range from one game to four.

So, no, this will not affect the NC State-UNC matchup this season in any way, unless some of these guys happen to get back into the amateur Foot-Lockerin’ business. Some of the Jordans that were sold by the players wound up on eBay, not surprisingly, and went for quite a lot of dough.

Personally I have no problem with athletes selling the free gear they get and don’t find this bothersome so much as amusing, what with another bit of bad PR getting thrown onto UNC’s pile. But I can also understand the frustrations of State fans who endured the end of the Jim Valvano era, when the penalties for the same violation were much steeper.

So anyway, who’s got some good shoe puns?
