NC State tourneytacular Saturday open thread

Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports

The baseball team has done everything it needed to do and then some, picking up a pair of wins to solidify its NCAA tournament resume. Those wins also happened to put NC State in the ACC tournament title game, which is set  for Sunday afternoon.

Given the round-robin format of the tourney, it still leaves one more game to play on Saturday night, even though that game is irrelevant to the outcome of the tournament. State takes on Virginia to close out pool play with the Cavs in sore need of a win for NCAA tournament purposes.

Elliott Avent is free to get creative with his lineup and pitching staff, though he probably won't want to tinker too much with a team that's on a roll.

Softball is facing elimination after dropping game one to Oregon 6-1 on Friday night. The Pack held a 1-0 lead for a few innings, but mistakes by its defense ultimately cost the team a shot at the shock upset. The ladies will have to win a twin bill today in order to reach the College World Series. Long, long odds. But given what we saw last night, I'm willing to believe anything is possible.
