New NC State pitching coach Clint Chrysler is Chipper Jones-approved

MLB: MLB: Baseball Hall of Fame-Induction Ceremony Gregory Fisher-USA TODAY Sports

NC State announced Tuesday the addition of new pitching coach Clint Chrysler to Elliott Avent’s staff. Chrysler, who had been serving in a similar capacity for Winthrop, replaces Scott Foxhall, who left for Mississippi State.

Chrysler has a nice track record and is well-respected but who needs that when you’ve got the endorsement of Hall of Famer Chipper Jones?

The two go way back, apparently—Chrysler was in attendance this past weekend for Jones’ induction into the Hall.

Chrysler is a Stetson alum and a former 17th round draft pick of the Seattle Mariners. He spent nine years kicking around the minors before retiring and getting into coaching. Since he’s been at Winthrop, he’s helped establish a pretty solid program within the Big South.

Of course, the main thing with assistants in just about every college sport is recruiting. If he is an improvement over Foxhall in that area, then this will end up a good hire.
