The NC State Baseball team overcame an early deficit on Sunday to take down #21 Coastal Carolina on the road in extra innings, 7-6.
Trailing 6-2 heading into the 5th inning, the Wolfpack bats came alive to produce a 4-run top of the 5th that evened the score. From there, Dalton Feeney and Kent Klyman combined to keep the Chanticleers scoreless over the final seven innings of the game, while Patrick Bailey launched a leadoff solo home run in the top of the 11th that proved to be the game winner.
Feeney (4.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K) set down the first 11 hitters he faced in order - recording 12 outs in the process, thanks to inducing a double-play to the first hitter he faced to wipe out an inherited runner in the 5th. He ran into trouble allowing the first two Chants to reach base in the bottom of the 9th. Klyman (3.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 HBP, 2 K) came on to get the Pack out of the precarious situation unharmed. Coastal Carolina had the winning run reach 3rd base in both the 9th and 10th innings, with Klyman able to end each inning safely with a critical strikeout. In the 11th, Coastal had the tying run on 3rd and the winning run on 1st, but Klyman was again able to escape, this time with a game-ending fly out to Lawson McArthur in right field.
NC State was able to plate two runs in the 3rd inning on an Evan Edwards two-RBI single, driving in Jonny Butler and Will Wilson. Edwards single cut the Chanticleers lead at the time to 4-2. Butler led off the inning with a double and was followed by a Wilson single.
Edwards was also involved in the four-run 5th inning that tied the contest. After Coastal plated a run each in the 3rd and 4th innings, the Wolfpack responded in a big way, scoring all four runs before making an out. J.T. Jarrett led off the top of the 5th by being hit by a pitch and Butler followed with a walk. Wilson (3-for-6, 2B, 2 R, RBI) then doubled, driving in Jarrett, and Bailey (3-for-5, HR, SF, R, 2 RBI) hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Butler (2-for-4, 2B, 2 BB, 2 R). Edwards (2-for-5, HR, BB, R, 4 RBI) followed with a two-run home run to right centerfield, tying the game. The home run is Edwards third of the year, tying him with Wilson for the team lead.
The Wolfpack had opportunities to take the lead with multiple base runners in each the 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th innings, but were unable to scratch a run in any of those frames. The game remained tied until Bailey’s 11th inning home run.
Vojtech Mensik finished the day with a pair of hits and a stolen base, the only other Wolfpack player to finish with multiple hits.
The win moves the Pack Nine to 7-0 on the season, and it should propel the team into the Top 20 in all the national polls.
NC State returns to the diamond on Wednesday at 5:00pm to take on a 5-2 Campbell team in another road contest.
