Pack Pounds Towson Tigers, 11-1

NC State improves to 20-1 on the season, James Guillory

NC State worked out of a couple jams early in the game en route to an 11-1 win over Towson on Tuesday night. With the win, the Wolfpack improve to 20-1 overall heading into their first ACC road series of the season at Miami.

Towson loaded the bases in the 1st inning, but thanks to JR C Brad Debo and RS-SR RHP Nolan Clenney, the Wolfpack were able to escape the inning without damage. With men on 1st and 2nd and 1 out, Debo caught Towson CF Javon Fields attempting to steal third base. That out would turn out to be large as back-to-back singles that followed would have plated Fields anyways. Clenney would come on in relief to record a strikeout and end the frame.

In the bottom of the 1st, NC State struck for three runs and a lead it would not relinquish. JR LF Jonny Butler led off with a walk, JR SS Will Wilson singled, and SO C Patrick Bailey followed with a double to drive in both Butler and Wilson. A flyout to center field by SR 1B Evan Edwards moved Wilson over to third base, and a FR CF Tyler McDonough singled home Wilson for the 3-0 Wolfpack lead.

From there it was a complete rout.

Wilson doubled home Butler in the 2nd inning, who had reached on a single. Edwards homered in the third to push the lead to 5-0.

Towson was able to plate one run in the 4th inning on back-to-back two out hits: a single by SS Dirk Masters and an RBI triple by Fields.

The Wolfpack added two runs in the 6th inning and four in the 7th inning to reach the final tally of 11-1. The four-run 7th was highlighted by a three-run Wilson home run to center field.

Butler (4-for-4, 2B, BB, 4 R, 2 RBI) and Wilson (3-for-5, 2B, HR, 2 R, 4 RBI) led the way offensively for the Wolfpack on the day, while Bailey (1-for-1, 2B, BB, R, RBI), Edwards (1-for-1, HR, HBP, 2 SF, R, 3 RBI), and SO 2B David Vazquez (1-for-3, BB, R) all had productive days at the plate.

Clenney (3.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K), SO LHP David Harrison (2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K), SO LHP Canaan Silver (2.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K), and FR RHP Andrew Tillery (1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K) combined for 8.1 innings of one-run relief on the day, racking up 11 strikeouts. The appearance was the first of Tillery’s NC State career.

The Wolfpack head to Miami for a three game road ACC series starting Friday.
